Synopsis

Filmmaker Grant Gee speaks with now-deceased Factory Records founder Tony Wilson; legendary producer Martin Hannett; surviving Joy Division band members Bernard Sumner, Stephen Morris, and Peter Hook; and the late Ian Curtis's Belgian lover Annik Honor in order to offer a vivid snapshot of the fleeting moment in time when Manchester's Joy Division changed the face of modern music. Born in the bleak landscape of industrialized Manchester -- a city that once thrived as a center of 19th century manufacturing but was far removed from its halcyon days by the time the band was founded -- Joy Division combined the energy of punk rock with the anger and alienation of their generation to stunning effect. When he wasn't pouring every ounce of his personal energy into penning poetic lyrics for a band that seemed to thrive on chaos, volatile frontman Curtis supported his family by working in the civil service as an Assistant Disablement Resettlement Officer. In 1980, as the band was set to embark on their first-ever North American tour, Curtis took his own life at the age of 23. In addition to offering the remarkable story of Joy Division as told by the very people who were privileged enough to have been there at that crucial moment in musical history, Gee's film also offers a meditation on the city that was struggling to reinvent itself following a devastating collapse. While Curtis's widow Deborah does not appear onscreen, text from her biography Touching from a Distance appear as a constant reminder of her presence in the talented musician's brilliant but fleeting life. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

5.0 out of 5 stars At last!, Jun 19 2008

(REAL NAME)
Anyone who has been or likely still is a fan of Joy Division will find this documentary nothing short of brilliant. The key players of the time are almost all present along with some additional fascinating characters that have rarely, if ever, been seen. Far from just a tribute to the legendary Ian Curtis, this is a well deserved and far too long in the making tribute to the mighty Joy Division. The passion and resonance of the interviewee's commentaries only confirm what a fan already knows about this band but to hear them talk is a beautiful experience.
I have been a fan of Joy Division for a long time and some of the footage on display here is stuff I never even knew existed. It sent a shiver down my spine and must be the equivalent of someone having camcorder footage of Christ's crucifixion (if that was indeed you're thing). It is masterfully put together and is reminiscent of Don Letts' Westway to the World documentary in the overall feeling it gives you to want to go out and listen again to music made by a band that only existed for a brief time but whose legacy remains as important as ever.

5.0 out of 5 stars heart and soul, Sep 9 2009
By android (montreal, QC canada) - See all my reviews
brilliant doc, insightful, energetic, very captivating... a perfect companion piece to anton corbijn's CLOSER bio-pic. director grant gee revisits the history of JOY DIVISION and places it in the context of manchester and the musical climate of the time. chocked full of rare concert footage, tv appearances and engaging interviews (JD members, tony wilson, peter saville, genesis p.orridge, corbijn)... highly recommended!
