Product Description

Description

Christmas Eve, 1914. On a World War I battlefield, a momentous event changed the lives of soldiers from France, Germany and England.

Academy Award®, Golden Globe® and BAFTA nominee for Best Foreign Film, JOYEUX NOEL (MERRY CHRISTMAS) tells the true-life story of the spontaneous Christmas Eve truce declared by Scottish, French and German troops in the trenches of World War I. Enemies leave their weapons behind for one night as they band together in brotherhood and forget about the brutalities of war. Diane Krüger (Troy), Daniel Brühl (Good Bye Lenin!) and Benno Fürmann (The Princess and the Warrior) head a first-rate international cast in a truly powerful, must-see film.

4.0 out of 5 stars TRULY WORTHWHILE WATCHING, Feb 2 2011

This movie is set in a time period that is so far removed from today, and yet the story is so relevant. It shows how useless war is, as the three groups of soldiers, German, French and Scottish put down their guns Christmas Eve 1914 and celebrate together the wonder that is Christmas. This infuriates those in charge and the soldiers are sworn to keep silent about what took place, or else be courtmartialed, which is probably why this story has taken so long to be told (a letter has been found, showing this situation actually took place). These same soldiers who shared their personal treasurers with each other during the ceasefire, then took up arms and killed each other. Not sure about the female role in this movie, if it is true or just for the movie, also disappointed they didn't use music that we are more familiar with. Still a great watch.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very moving!, Jan 15 2010

Very moving! This story needed to be told. Based on a true story it shows the in-humanity of war and how the individual gets lost in the persuit of political goals. Your enemy not only has a face, they have a family, a religion and they miss the everyday things of life (playing sports, having tea with their mother etc.) like you....
My grandfather was in the first and second world war and I am now very sad that he never spoke of his experience (and we never asked). Some of the memories of this great generation will be lost, this movie preserves at least some.
