Appear Before Judge Deed,
By
This review is from: Judge John Deed: Season 1 & Pilot (DVD)
This is the first of five Judge John Deed series - not ever broadcast in Canada it would seem. First broadcast about 10 years ago it is still outrageously amusing and topical. Along with the Judge's serial sex affairs it deals with the need for the Courts to be independent of governments and bureaucrats.

Judge John Deed S1/PilotIf you've seen Martin Shaw replacing Roy Marsdon in P.D. James' "Holy Orders" and "Murder Room", you'll instantly see the depth of Shaw's Talent. He carries the series as a rebellious High Court Judge, yet never steps outside the law. Even when he looks like he'll succumb to political pressure he manages to pass justice on an informant MI5 wants cleared. He demonstrates humility by seldom using his title "Sir John" and constantly tells everyone he prefers to be called "Judge" rather than "Your Lordship" outside the courtroom. He has an "active" social life with a married woman making her husband a political enemy for life. He claims to be "romantically" in love with his former student. His secretary helps the judge both through her support of him as a person and by her contacts, The POLES, (called by the aristocracy of the court "People of Low Esteem")and bends the law in his favour. Judge John Deed is an extremely, likable, cantacorous and frisky character whom I liked immediately. He's committed to the law, interferes with the lawyers throughout the court session, and refuses to bend to political pressure. His rakish charm creates havoc and effects his career. He's attractive to women except for his rebellious teenage daughter whom he's trying to raise as a single dad. The series also offers social commentary as well as intellectual stimuli. From the box: Pilot: Racial tensions surround a high-profile case while Deed's daugher brings problems closer to hom. Rough Justice: Deed comes under pressure to let off a charismatic MI5 informant charged with battering his wife. Duty of Care: A well-connected businessman facing a charge of corporate manslaughter is pulling strings in high places .... Appropriate Response: A rapist convicted by Deed is released from prison and is intent on revenge .... Hidden Agenda: Deed steps on thin ice when an attractive doctor is charged with murder .... Series comes on 3 discs in a standard DVD case.

Disappointing drivel,
By
This review is from: Judge John Deed: Season 1 & Pilot (DVD)
This was very disappointing, particularly in comparison with the George Gently series. Improbable both in its depiction of Court activity and with attempts at titilation.Political messages anything but subtle. What a waste of Shaw's talent. He should make better choices.
