Judy Garland, the human being revealed., April 28 2007
This review is from: Judy (Paperback)
Judy Garland is considered one of the greatest talents ever in show business. She conveyed great joy, sadness, vulnerability, passion, pain and a variety of different emotions on stage, screen, radio, records and television. She had a profound effect on the audiences and the people in her life. Yet despite this she remains a controversial and tragic figure to many and sometimes her talents are overlooked in favour of trashy biographical accounts that bear no truth whatsoever. But this book helps change that, Gerold Frank delves deep into the myths to uncover the human being behind the myth. With great detail he brings to life Judy's childhood, her rise to stardom at MGM (in such classics as "The Wizard Of Oz, Meet Me In St Louis and Easter Parade"), her marriages and children and the illnesses and comebacks. This book is not about tragedy, it is about a warm, bright, funny, talented adorable woman who was loved by many people who knew and worked with her. She had a profound affect on the people in her life and the audiences who saw her live or worshipped her in the movies, records or television. To get the full story of Judy's life and times read this book along with John Fricke's two wonderful books and also "Rainbow's End" by Coyne Steven Sanders.

Judy Garland revealed., Sep 20 2006
This review is from: Judy (Paperback)
Judy Garland often gets the short end of the stick in regards to the stories said and written about her. Most of the stories are overblown and much more are untrue, what is hardly said in any case is what a talented woman she was. But this all changes here with this book. Gerold Frank interviewed many people close to Judy and what is revealed is not the tragic, difficult and psychocotic woman we have been hearing about for years, but a woman of enormous strength. Judy was a talented but troubled woman, and sometimes she was a self-destructive woman, but those were just obstacles in the life of Judy Garland, and she fought hardest to overcome them and never give in. This book is not about tragedy, this book is about a woman who was affectionate, bright and funny woman, a very adorable woman who happened to have some troubles in her life. The feelings of love that many had for Judy off-stage and screen is felt throughout, the memories of the people who knew her best and loved her most continue to put her story in the proper light and context. You will come away from the book with the sense that you knew Judy and you loved Judy. RIP Miss Judy Garland.

And now, here is Judy Garland, Sep 8 2006
This review is from: Judy (Paperback)
"Stories about Judy Garland are frozen in a pattern, as if she had no life after Over the Rainbow", George Cukor once accuratly summized and now here we have the real inside glimpse into the personality of Judy Garland. Gerold Frank interviewed lots of people connected to Judy, including her children, husbands and even her doctors and what comes out is a talented but troubled woman who tried to find her place in the world, but once and for all Judy Garland was no tragic figure, she was a bright, affectionate, loving and funny lady and that's what the people who knew her remember best, her humour that could get her through anything and without the humour she would never have survived it for as long as she did, she was a woman of enormous strength. When Frank speaks of Judy's flaws he is not incrimnating towards his subject, the love that many had for her as a person shines through this book. After reading this, I needed to see and hear Judy again, I felt I owed it to her. I listened to her sing "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" and then watched her in "Easter Parade". She was one hell of an entertainer and a very amazing woman.
