Tomita's score for the original 1966 TV series is one of the things that made it so magical, and many of the themes and techniques he used then are present here. The disc opens with a beautiful reworking of the Japanese show's title theme, which unfortunately will not be familiar to American fans since the American TV version used a different theme song. The movie is rumored to be coming up for a US release in 2003--hopefully the music will be intact.
So perhaps this recording is more for the Tomita fan than the Kimba fan. Tomita gained his fame in the US with his astounding synthesizer recordings; his orchestral scores are just as rich and varied in their sonorities and just as "pictorial" in evoking mental images of what the music is describing.
This being a Japanese import, all the printed material is in Japanese, but the music is what matters, and taken on its own it is one of the most interesting and beautiful soundtrack scores I can think of. The recorded sound is crystal clear and close up, which allows you to hear all the many fine details of the score perfectly.
