From Amazon

Unless your species evolved sometime after 1993 when Jurassic Park hit theaters, you're no doubt familiar with this dinosaur-bites-man disaster tale set on an island theme park gone terribly wrong. But if Speilberg's amped-up CGI creation left you longing for more scientific background and ... well, character development, check out the original Michael Crichton novel. Although not his best book (get ahold of sci-fi classic The Andromeda Strain for that), Jurassic Park fills out the film version's kinetic story line with additional scenes, dialogue, and explanations while still maintaining Crichton's trademark thrills-'n'-chills pacing. As ever, the book really is better than the movie. --Paul Hughes --This text refers to the Mass Market Paperback edition.

From Publishers Weekly

An island off Costa Rica will soon be the world's most ambitious theme park--a dinosaur preserve. A visionary financier's biotechnology company has succeeded in cloning these extinct reptiles. Fifteen different species, presumably incapable of breeding, are now placidly roaming around, but Jurassic Park's resident mathematician, an expert in chaos theory, predicts that the animals' behavior is inherently unstable. When a rival genetics firm attempts to steal frozen dinosaur embryos, things go haywire. Two cute American kids, eight-year-old Tina and 11-year-old Tim, a safari guide from Kenya and a Denver paleontologist set things aright--almost. Though the dinosaurs here are more interesting than the people, Crichton ( The Andromeda Strain ) ingeniously interweaves details of genetic engineering, computer wizardry and current scientific controversy over dinosaurs to fashion a scary, creepy, mesmerizing techno-thriller with teeth. It can be read as a thought-provoking fable about technological hubris and the hazards of bioengineering. 150,000 first printing; Literary Guild main selection; movie rights sold to Steven Spielberg/Universal Pictures .

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent thriller, Feb 12 2007

This is an excellent story that combines very well science with action/adventure. The science involved is truly awe-inspiring and is easily understood, without being boring. The action scenes are harrowing and very thrilling. The characters are quite interesting (especially mathematician Ian Malcolm). It's probably my all-time favourite novel. Strongly recommended!

1.0 out of 5 stars Save your money; see the movie. This book is a loser., Aug 24 1999
By A Customer
Very rarely, a bad book is written which is made into a better movie. Jurassic Park is such a book.

Science fiction is not a genre noted for strong characterization; usually, the science comes first, a workable plot comes second, and everything else is a distant third. Even by that standard, Crichton's characters are annoying at best. The computer genius is a total nerd, the attorney is an amoral lizard, and the industrialist could be easily replaced by a parrot which simply squawks "Bottom line" every 30 seconds. The scientists are, of course, merely humble, reverent seekers of knowledge and truth. With the exception of "Ian Malcolm", whose role in the book seems to be The Designated Smartass. Simply ignoring the flaws and getting on with the book is not an option - the personalities are so hollow, one dimensional, and stereotypical that enjoying any other aspects of the book is impossible.

The book is not totally without merit - the initial premise is interesting, and portions of the plot are somewhat imaginative. Nowhere nearly enough to save the book, however.

In short, an interesting situation, an unremarkable plot which has a few interesting twists, all of which is eclipsed by really *bad* characters.

4.0 out of 5 stars Clever and Suspenseful, Oct 30 2008
By
Douglas P. Murphy "Author, The Griffon Trilog... (Charlottesville) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
This book combines drama and suspense with science and a certain amount of moralizing. The book's major premise-using the DNA of long extinct species-is clever because it is so believable and thus frightening. The book plays upon the idea that if one tampers with Nature's most sacred mechanisms, there will be a price to pay and dangers that one can neither anticipate nor accommodate. The idea of a Caribbean park featuring such resurrected creatures provides a macabre and riveting fascination. The book and movie have been out for a while but nevertheless, if you haven't read this, it is still a good read.
