Bible Hill, Nova Scotia-born singer Cindy Church walks a thin line between understated and underwhelming on this, her second album. Jazzy pop (Floyd Tillman's "I Gotta Have My Baby Back"), gospel (Shirley Eikhard's "It's Just a Little Rain"), and uptempo rockabilly (Church's own "Sleeping Alone") are all given the same overly polite country-pop treatment, with sprinklings of pedal steel and the occasional mandolin for embellishment. The whole thing is so breezy and light that it's in danger of leaving as little aftertaste as a Weight Watchers microwave meal. But the Juno nominated singer's bell-like voice, sincerity, and choice of strong material--notably John P. McLaughlin's pretty "Ste. Anne de Bellevue" and the whimsical opener "Trying to Rope the Wind"--keep
Just a Little Rain from simply floating away.
