Review

Just Married & Cooking is an instant classic that every young couple should put on their gift registry. Yes, it’s a great collection of recipes, as easy as they are delicious and interesting. But more than that, it’s an owner’s manual for the heart of a household, as inspiring to (ahem) older couples as it is essential to newlyweds. And Brooke and James—just married, themselves—have written just the way they cook: with wit and warmth and unfussy Southern charm.

—Ted Allen, host of Food Network’s “Chopped”

"This scrumptious debut cookbook tackles the ins and outs of cooking as a couple. Real-life couple Daily News columnist Parkhurst (Belle in the Big City, 2008) and chef Briscione (winner of the Food Network series Chopped) reveal not just their own expertise but an endearing empathy for kitchen novices. Foodie anecdotes add spice, and there is even a splash of food history. But it is the authors' tricks-of-the-trade advice that adds most to this perfect Mint Julep of a book—and yes, that recipe is here, too. An exciting, essential volume that delivers on every front."

--Kirkus Reviews

"A great gift for newly engaged, married, and domestic partners."

--Publishers Weekly

Product Description

After the bells have chimed, the gifts have been opened, and the honeymoon suitcases have been unpacked, newlywed couples often find themselves wondering, “So, what’s for dinner?” That’s why chef James Briscione and his wife, writer Brooke Parkhurst, put together Just Married and Cooking—a guide to living, eating, and entertaining together.

Divided into two sections—“Life As We Know It” and “New Traditions”—Just Married and Cooking is full of valuable advice, easy-to-master techniques, time-saving secrets, and most important, recipes for delicious dishes. In “Life As We Know It,” Brooke and James offer over a hundred recipes for everyday eating. From delectable morning muffins to after-work appetizers and easy-to-prepare dinners, this section has everything young couples need for simple, healthy, and enticing eating. “New Traditions” contains nine menus to help newlyweds mark the special occasions in their new lives together: a glamorous birthday-girl dinner, a fresh and warm spring lunch, a derby-day party complete with a recipe for fail-proof mint juleps, and much more.

Including a wedding registry list, suggestions for how to keep a well-stocked pantry, a glossary of frequently used chef terms, and advice for how to plan ahead for easy entertaining, Just Married and Cooking is the cookbook newlywed couples everywhere will turn to time and again for recipes and help navigating the kitchen.

5.0 out of 5 stars A staple of your kitchen essentials, Jun 3 2011
By LBP - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Just Married and Cooking: 200 Recipes for Living, Eating, and Entertaining Together (Hardcover)
Just as one needs certain cutlery and spices to complete a meal, Just Married and Cooking is the necessary ingredient to a well-stocked kitchen. Each recipe delights in the fun background story of how the recipe came to be. What is particularly endearing, is that Ms. Parkhurst and Mr. Briscione are incredibly knowledgeable and talented, but thet don't lecture or come across as gourmet snobs. Rather, they teach in a way that makes even the novice cook feel okay to not realize that paillard is a fancy term for chicken cutlet. Unlike traditional cookbooks, this is fun, engaging, and most of all- so welcoming. An autobiography of their lives through recipes is really what this book is about. The pictures are gorgeous, the recipes are easy to follow, and there is food for every occasion. Be it married, divorced, or just plain single and loving it, Just Married and Cooking will have you fall in love- if not with a spouse, then most definitely with cooking.

5.0 out of 5 stars FABULOUS! Diced, Chopped & Roasted Way Through Entire Cookbook!, Oct 3 2011

What a delicious world it would be if cookbook authors could have their very own shadow team--willing testers and tasters--ready to master the culinary skills of their mentors.

When Brooke and James published "Just Married and Cooking" five months ago, two of their biggest fans, my daughter and I, literally heeded their call to "Put down those takeout menus and get cooking!"

Since then, we've been elbow deep in dough and stirring the pot to herald the joys of living, eating and entertaining together, as envisioned by the newlywed team. We wanted to showcase how their inventive recipes, ranging from basic to elegant, and jazzy and comforting, can be made at home.

Immediately into our culinary experimentation, we noticed the ease of preparation, then basked in the glow of the raves, following each course and after the dessert had been served.

If we sound biased, it's because we've actually diced, chopped, mixed and roasted our way through over 200 of the delectable recipes!

A series of cooking successes, however, caused a dilemma: which absolute favorite dish or standout chapter would my daughter and I recommend to friends at church, moms at playgroup and, of course, newlyweds just starting out??

James and Brooke's advice--"decide what you're craving at the moment and then mix and match recipes."

That would work--part 1, "Life as We Know It," offers hearty, everyday meals on a glam budget; part 2, "New Traditions," reserves sumptuous selections for the indulgent. And don't forget to skip over to the luscious chapter of pictures- it's a smackdown of courses captured on camera!

A few favorites: Brooke's Best Granola, Jamie's chapter on homemade seasoned salts, Pork Chops w Bourbon & Prunes, Seared Skirt Steak w Homemade Salsa Verde, Blondies & the inimitable Watermelon Margaritas

Aspiring and seasoned cooks alike- this book is for you!

2.0 out of 5 stars Decent recipes, but a cheaply printed book that'll fall apart in your kitchen, July 12 2011
By Leo - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Just Married and Cooking: 200 Recipes for Living, Eating, and Entertaining Together (Hardcover)
The cookbook has some good recipes, however, it's not kitchen friendly! The pages are printed double-sided in a bright blue ink on cheap, see-through paper. The most disappointing: it only has a few pages of pics in the middle, so you don't know what your recipe will/should look like. It needs to be tougher, laminated pages (a la Ina Garten) to withstand wear and tear on the kitchen counter.
