Product Description

From the Back Cover

--This text refers to the Mass Market Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Someone ahead his own time, Aug 9 2006
By Miriam Keller "Miriam Keller" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: KNOCK (Mass Market Paperback)
In this fine theatre piece, J. Romains presents in a witty way the relationship patient x doctor very ahead of his own time. In a very funny way he tells us how he sees the medical world/mind. Although written in 1924 it is so updated that one cannot let to think that Romains was a visionary. The story takes place at a tiny French village where the acting doctor sells his place to a newcomer. And this newcomer, Knock, turns the city upside-down with his new "method" of treating ill people/diseases. It is a real revolution, unexpected but surely very welcome by the reader.

5.0 out of 5 stars The State of Medicine today predicted by Jules Romains, Aug 31 2010
By Thomas G. Steffens - Published on Amazon.com
This book is an example of classic French comedy of a style which belongs exclusively to the French. The ideal presentation
is at the Comédie Française in Paris.
But more than this it foretells what medicine will become in the 20th and 21st centuries. Our society has virtually become a hospital where we
live for being diagnosed and attempted cures and to be continually thinking of disease and doing so many things to prevent it that we actually
accomplish just the opposite! Our news programs devotes almost half of its time to scaring us with descriptions of diseases we didn't even know about
but now do just to add to our worry burden. It is no coincidence that this fills the coffers of the purveyors of modern medicine.
Nothing brings this out better than Jules Romains', Knock. Before Dr. Knock came to a sleepy village in France there was no disease. People led ordinary
lives but he transformed this society into one living totally for medicine.
