Grade 6-9?During the summer of 1918 in Fort Lee, New Jersey, 15-year-old twins Fitzhugh and Nelly Dalton make their acting debut. They star in an anti-German film serial written by their mother Dorothy who, after her husband's death, has been forced to abandon her loftier literary aspirations for a writing job that pays. As their characters are pursued onscreen by a "dark invader," Fitz and Nelly become the target of an unknown villain who sabotages the set, putting the twins in real danger as they perform their stunts. Their search for the identity and motive of the villain ultimately leads them to those responsible for the explosion that killed their father. As the heroes' lives begin to mirror the serial in which they are acting, readers may be confused by muddled lines between the intertwining plots, and some knowledge of World War I is necessary to understand and appreciate this fast-paced melodrama.?Kelly Diller, Humboldt High School, IA
