Product Description

From School Library Journal

Grade 9 Up Everybody in the hive world Necromunda is seeking to kill rogue bounty hunter Kal Jerico. Intensely muscled and heavily armed, he and his dim-witted sidekick, Scabbs, indiscriminately move from one bounty to another in this series of vignettes, fighting maniacal cyborgs, corrupt officials, and giant spiders. In the upper and lower hives where corruption runs high, the stereotypical hero and his underling have little loyalty except to one another and their monetary reward from each bounty. Many of the episodes are visually lackluster, with writing that is contrived and minimal plot development. In the concluding Kal Jerico in Crimson Tide, after stowing away on a ship with religious zealots who worship a giant spider, the protagonist predictably defeats his adversaries, yet the story simply trails off rather than providing a definitive ending. Jerico is a character spin-off from the tabletop and PC game Warhammer 40000. Die-hard aficionados may appreciate the tales, but overall the writing is pedestrian and the illustrations are cramped, cluttered, and unaffecting. Paul Sizer's Moped Army (Fiery Studios, 2005) is a sharper stratospheric science-fiction choice. Jennifer Feigelman, Goshen Public Library and Historical Society, NY

This review is from: Kal Jerico: Underhive Bounty Hunter (Paperback)
Kal Jerico is the most famous or perhaps infamous bounty hunter in the Underhive of Necromunda. Together with is appropriately named sidekick Scabbs, the pair root out the criminal element all in the name of fame and fortune...mostly fortune. Writer Gordon Rennie's creation is one of the funniest and rousing adventure characters around. This book collects around two dozen stories from the pages of Warhammer monthly into one big, digest-sized volume. Most of the stories are about 6 - 8 pages in length although there are three that are considerably longer.

In "Yolanda" the pair set out after Outlaw Annie, the leader of an Underhive gang who has kidnapped Yolanda, the daughter of a noble lord. But Kal makes the discovery that Annie and Yolanda are one in the same and decides to use that to his advantage to try and collect both rewards. But the pair soon find out Yolanda is more trouble than she is worth. Yolanda/Annie would appear in more stories in the book.

In "Redemption" Kal finds himself having to rescue his partner from the clutches of a fanatical religious cult who believes they can cleanse the soul by tossing victims into molten lava. Suitably, Kal makes it a last minute rescue because it's more dramatic! "Motherlode" is one of the three lengthy stories in the book and it's the best one as well. Kal and Scabbs are captured by Guzman Ludd, a repellant, bloated merchant trader who wants Kal to locate the legendary Motherlode, a long lost trove of ancient technology. The group delves deep into the Underhive where they find things far worse than the savage bands of Scavvies that dwell there. Kal and Scabbs eventually find the Motherlode...but the numerous skeletons lying about indicate that there were others there before them who never made it out alive!

"The Freak" finds Kal and Scabbs having to break up a pit fight to arrest one of the fighters who has a price on his head. This doesn't sit too well with the organizers of the fight who are not about to let Kal walkout with their property. Kal offers a wager and finds himself in a battle to the death with the monstrous Freak who batters Kal about until Scabbs can get the odds up!

A great team of artists including Richard Elson, Karl Kopinski, Stef Kopinski, Daniel Lapham, Wayne Reynolds, Roman Sydo, Dylan Teague, and Steve Yeowell lend their creative talents to make this one of the most entertaining graphic novels yet from Games Workshop and the Black Library. There's also nine pages of min-pinups of Kal in the back of the book. Great fun!
