Product Description

Product Description

Kalacakra and the Tibetan Calender describes the contents of current Tibetan almanacs, from basic mathmatics to symbolic and historical information. Essential for understanding the Kalacakra Tantra's first chapter, this book describes the origin of the calendrical systems in this Tantra and translates and elucidates the relevant sections from its famous commentary, the Vimalaprabha. The main calenders in use in Tibet today have remained unchanged since the 15th century, when lamas in several different traditions tried to make sense of the calculation systems they had inherited from India, and to adjust them to remove increasingly obvious errors. This book analyzes the main systems that survive today, assesing their accuracy and comparing them with the methods described in the original Tantra.

About the Author

This review is from: Kalacakra & the Tibetan Calendar (Hardcover)
I am a well-known astrologer, have studied and practiced Tibetan Buddhism for over 35 years, and was the first person to write a software program on Tibetan astrology. I read Tibetan script, have been on pilgrimage to Tibet a number of times, etc. All of this just to give my credentials so that I can make this clear:

Edward Henning's book is a marvelous piece of scholarship and research. It answered questions I was never able to understand and lays out all of the issues with the Tibetan calendar (and the astrology connected to it) with clarity and insight.

I consider this the definitive book on the subject and am very grateful to the author for making this very complex subject accessible. Thanks!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Miraculously Great Book, Jun 6 2008

There are two miracles associated with this book: 1. Henning has penetrated fantastically obscure original texts to reconstruct the methods Tibetans used to generate their calendars and planetary tables. 2. He explains this material so clearly that any of us with even a rudimentary knowledge of astronomy and arithmetic can actually follow what he's saying. The subject is fascinating; the scholarship is impeccable.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Reference, May 17 2012

My interest in the Tibetan Calendar is professional, as my job is to predict worldwide public holidays for many years into the future, for most of the world's leading diary and calendar publishers, as well as large multi-nationals and shipping and logistics companies.

As such, having scoured the internet for sources of information as to the rules for calculating the Tibetan calendar (real mathematics, not just some gooey new-age mumbo-jumbo) I can safely say that this is "the" reference on the Tibetan calendar.

Note that the book's website supplies the needed tweaks to extend the book's coverage of the Tibetan calendar to the Bhutanese and Mongolian calendars.
