This review is from: Kalachakra: The Tantric Buddhist Ritual Given by His Holiness the Dalai Lama (CD-ROM)
I attended the Kalachakra Spiti 2000. This CD room just shows the very superficial part of the ritual, without giving real importance to the key parts of it. It shows the Kalachakra ritual from the perspective of a foreign touristy eye with no deep understanding of the Tibetan culture, religion etc. Even the way the photos were shown is too busy and we can hardly see the quality of the professional photos. For those interested in adventure and exotic rituals this is a good stereotype. As a final comment the ritual finished when the monks poured the sand of the Kalachakra at the lake nearby, SO even the coverage of the event was not done until the end. I know the theme is complex and that is why there is so much misunderstanding about it specially in the west, but this CD ROM DOES NOT MAKE JUSTICE OF THE BEAUTY OF THE KALACHAKRA INITIATION, TEACHING AND MANDALA.

4.0 out of 5 stars Journey to The East?, Jan 7 2003

This review is from: Kalachakra: The Tantric Buddhist Ritual Given by His Holiness the Dalai Lama (CD-ROM)
I am resolutely from that generation which `has a problem with authority', and thus feel some instinctual resistance to any doctrine. So, despite being something of an `old hippy', I approached the Kalachakra CD with a little cynicism, and although it has not converted me to Buddhism (my soul is too cynical, independent or simply indecisive to subscribe to anyone else's `path'), it does offer an amazing insight into the Dalai Lama's world and Buddhist practice, as well as, quite simply, some good advice for a contented life!

As an artist, my attention was particularly caught by the Mandala, a two metre square picture made by several monks using grains of sand. Fantastically detailed - the diametric opposite of minimalist tendencies in the West - it took many days of non-stop work to create, and then, after the culmative day of the Kalachakra, they just destroy it and distribute the grains of sand back to the earth. For me, at least, this was a salutory lesson, and hard to comprehend from my own obsessive `memorial-making'.

Profoundly interesting and informative, the excellent production presents Bojan Brecelj's superb photographs in a varied (possibly sometimes too varied?) selection of cuts, fades and overlays. This produces a moving collage of a slideshow which, no doubt, demonstrates `cutting-edge' technology, and which worked well on my Mac. The narration and musical soundtrack displayed the same high production values, and the script was well-written and easy to follow.

Fascinating, visually stimulating and thought-provoking, I would consider it essential viewing for anyone with even a passing interest in Buddhism or the Tibetan way of life.
