Book Description

April 1 1986 0915299488 978-0915299485 Rev Sub
Toyota's world-renowned success proves that just-in-time (JIT) makes other manufacturing practices obsolete. This simple but powerful book is based on the seminars given by Taiichi Ohno and other senior production staff to introduce Toyota's own supplier companies to JIT. It teaches the philosophy and implementation of what many call the most efficient production system in the world.

  • Provides a clear structure for an introductory JIT training program.
  • Explains every aspect of the JIT system, including how to set it up and how to refine it once it's in place.
  • Shows how to use a simple visual system to control the production process.

Every day more American companies are learning that JIT works outside Japan. Now you can get started with this step-by-step book which guides you through the implementation process. Every engineer, manager, supervisor, and worker should read this book to get the clearest, simplest, and most complete introduction to JIT available in English.

Results at American companies after reading this book:

  • Lead-time on one product was reduced from 12 weeks to 4 days.
  • Setup time on a large blanking press was reduced from eight hours to one minute and four seconds.
  • Work-in-process has been reduced 50 percent plant-wide.
  • Factory floor space was opened up 30 to 40 percent in every on of their plants.

1.0 out of 5 stars An absolute farce of a review on Toyota April 5 1999
By A Customer
This book failed to capture the essence behind the workings of Toyota. Whether it was through poor research or a simple lack of understanding this book should be avoided at all costs.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good book on TPS June 3 2012

It gives a lot of insides of TPS and the reasons led to its development. Also makes the reader think and to answer questions in a provocative way. Weakness is sometimes the structure due to which it is a better choice for a person who is not a beginner with lean/TPS.

3.0 out of 5 stars Review from lean manufacturing junction Jan. 27 2009
By James Paul Ledingham - Published on Amazon.com
This is a good book for helping people understand the basic concepts of TPS (Lean manufacturing). It doesn't go into detail about how to implement, but it is an easy to read, simple to follow book about the TPS fundamentals.
4.0 out of 5 stars Lean Help Oct. 24 2008
By Stephen H. Donnelly - Published on Amazon.com
My boss recommended the book to me as an introdution to lean thinking several years ago. I found it dry. This time through I got more out of it because we have been implementing and teaching lean for several years and experience has made the details of the book are more understandable and helpful. My parents also seem much smarter these days. I must be getting old.
5.0 out of 5 stars Maximize your Returns May 11 2005
By George Johnson - Published on Amazon.com
The book is eye opening. Many of the processes described can be applied to any business as a management philosophy. Managers must look for improvement or face stiff competition from those who don't.
