4.0 out of 5 stars very good place to start (or review), April 6 2011

This book is very good because of the way that it illustrates Conrad Fischer's way of thinking - which is the way that most medical students should be thinking - differential/labs/diagnosis/treatment with a bit of pathophys thrown in.

This book is (IMHO) not enough to be very successful on the boards. It is a very good framework to read - and then you can choose to read more in other resources depending on what your weak areas are (or areas where you just want to know more). Fischer says as much in the preface and section regarding ' how to use this book'

The only reason I deducted a star is that this book is really not very different from master the boards for step 3. There's just a bit more pathophys in most sections (although i'm a little confused at the ob/gyn sections which seem worse than in MTB step 3; someone really dropped the ball on this one).

If you read this, and fill in some notes from a question bank - then look up your weak areas in your medschool notes and/or particular texts you will be golden for board exams.

If you are considering purchasing Fischer's flashcard series - you may want to hold off on that until you purchase this book as Fischer tends to hit the same material in his flashcards (I own them - and while they're still good for review - you could easily hit all those points just by reading the sections in this book repeatedly - I bought the flashcards before the book - )

When i read all review about this book, i was so excited! and ordered book with out any delay....now i have read half of this book and realized this book is incomplete, u can use this book as last 2-3 day high yield review but nothing more then that. I was planning to do this book along with uworld but unfortunately i had to add 1 more book in my plan!

pros- high yield material in best format possible.
cons- lack many many high yield topics :( if it was a complete book covering all topics , it would have been best book for CK in market!

I do not know why people like this book that much and they wanted to use the author name in their comments. I bought this book because of the comments. I thought finally I found the book for step 2 CK which covers all topic and it is all I need. However After I read some chapters of the book , I understood It is not the book I am looking for. It is not horrible. However I can not say that it is superior to FA. It is just OK. I liked rheumatology section however infection, pulmonology and endocrinology were bad, cardio and neurology were OK. FA also has some gap( such as drug side effects). Certainly, UW is superior to them.
Overall I would say UW>>>FA>this book.
I hope It helps.
Do not listen the comments which contain "thanks Dr.. "
Good luck every one!

4.0 out of 5 stars MTB vs FA, Oct 25 2011

went threw 50% of the book along with 50% of FA.
+ve:
great highlight of HY (less in FA)
easy to read
well explained concepts (less in FA)
useful side marks
great table summaries
space for notes
great Q and A along the book (none in FA)
goes great with the video course
-ve:
some chapters are disorganized
lack of important topics f.e. Vertigo (FA covers more, highlights less)
too much color (FA is better to mark with color)
bad index (prefer FA -every beginning of chapter)

not the BEST but GOOD enough.
in my opinion MTB>FA.

Best of Luck!
