Kate & Allie: Season One introduced a new type of nuclear family to the 1980s: a pair of divorced women living with their children together in a somewhat cramped New York brownstone. A mid-season replacement in 1984, the sitcom starring Susan Saint James as Kate McArdle and Jane Curtain as Allie Lowell was both a critical and commercial success. The shoulder pads, clunky answering machine, and hairdon'ts give away the decade, but the storylines of grown-up best friends supporting and, at times, sparring with each other during personal and professional crises are timeless. Curtain and Saint James share a wonderful chemistry that makes them easy to watch.

In the first of six episodes, viewers are introduced to Allie's first post-divorce date, played by a dashing young Kelsey Grammer (Cheers, Frasier). Almost two decades before the gals on Sex and the City began tackling relationships, Kate summed it up best: "Dating's about finding someone so you never have to date again." By the time the series ended production in 1989, Kate and Allie's relationship had gotten a little hackneyed and it was time for the ladies to move on. As others have stated, this is better than the US release both with price and the fact you get season two as well. The problem is that half the episodes on the set are the syndicated (i.e. edited) versions, not the original airings. Some episodes run about 22 minutes, and others 24. It's most obvious when the epilogues with Kate & Allie sitting & sipping coffee are missing. The whole point of purchasing DVDs of sitcoms is to get the ENTIRE episode. Could they not find the master copies of certain episodes? Or was someone just lazy in putting this together? The manufacturers really should be required to tell the consumer whether or not episodes are complete. It really cuts down on the enjoyment factor. 5 stars for the show itself, but 3 for the release.

This is a show that with a little updating could be successful today. The episodes look good on the disk considering age and medium. If you skipped the U.S. release in favor of more episodes you'll be satisfied with this one. Note however the only extra is a bonus episode of "Gimme a Break." There are no interviews bloopers or anything extra related to Kate and Allie. 5 stars for the show, the lower rating is for Amazons misinformation and vei's missing the opportunity for a definitive disk.

The episodes are as good as I remember them to be, and this is a much better deal than the 6-episode disc that comprised the American release of Season 1. This American 6-episode disc costs approximately the same as this two-season release. However, 2 consecutive sets have had the same problem: episodes 5 through 8 of Season 2 cannot be accessed. (This problem has not occurred with any of the other discs, nor has it occurred on any other DVDs in our collection.) It might have been a defective run.
