Produced by Joe Boyd and Greg Prestopino, this self titled release features musical assistance from John Cale, Amos Garrett, David Grisman, Lowell George, Bobby Keys, Tony Levin and Steve Gadd, A wonderfully accomplished and touchingly beautiful album, this release wowed the critics and Folk audience with it's deeply moving selection of self-penned songs including 'Heart Like A Wheel', covered by Linda Ronstadt. I ordered this CD re-issue of the McGarrigle sisters' debut album after hearing to my great dismay of Kate McGarrigle's passing. Their first LP's were a big part of my life in the 70's and 80's and I wanted to hear those first songs again. (I already have their later albums on CD.) The music is as I remembered it - expressive voices, sweet vocal harmonies, creative melodies; intimate, funny, heart-warming / heart-breaking songs. However there seems to have been no re-mastering for CD (the bass is mushy for instance) and there are no liner notes, no lyrics, no musician credits, and only the skimpiest of composer credits. They don't even say which sister wrote which "McGarrigle" song, but you can find that out from other sources. Overall I recommend the CD highly because of the quality of the music and the voices.

Duly noted complete lack of credits.EVERYTHING these Canadian singers have put out is amazing. The Odditties record will be out on CD soon. I'm buying it even tho' I bought it on iTunes Let's have more of the back catalogue released please

This is truly an upbeat, fun, beautifully mastered piece. I think the best of their albums over all. It's one I never tire of hearing and play it constantly. The quality of this album is best heard at top volume. Just great fun! I wish they had kept with this type of venue; their other albums don't come up to this excitement.

This disc is an essential for anybody with an ear. The material and production values have held up beautifully over time; and the performances are first rate: the layers of harmony still beguile after all these years. These are unique artists. It is really tough to pigeon-hole their style, but why bother? This effort merits inclusion in any list of great [...] music - it is great stuff.

I learned about Kate and Anna about 30 years ago by reading about them in Rollingstone Magazine. We've never looked back. For me, they are the best. Their harmonies are beautiful and every song on the CD is better than the one that I just listened to.If you are new fan of K&A, listen to the song samples. |
