Review

"Kate is an emotionally honest story that will keep readers smiling through their tears." -Wendy Kitts, Atlantic Books Today, Spring 2004

Directed at young adults and written in journal form, each word of this novel is perfect - the raw, honest emotion of a 14-year-old navigating life and sadly, death. -Wendy Kitts, St. John Telegraph Journal July 5, 2004

"Author Valerie Sherrard ventures out into territory few writers would dare touch and succeeds in presenting a surprisingly well-balanced tale with humour and insight and does not overcast the novel with the darkness of Kate's circumstance. Just remember to keep the tissues handy." -Kate Larking, The Calgary Herald, August 14, 2004 --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Book Description

There's one other thing I should mention right off, which is that I'm fourteen years old and dying. (I guess that was two things, but the significance of one is sort of tied to the other, don't you think?)ðKate Benchworth

Kate Benchworth is far from typical. Having been diagnosed with a brain tumour that could end her life at any time, she views the world with refreshing honesty and rare insight. As her family and members of her community struggle to accept what lies ahead, Kate refuses to give in to self-pity. Determined to live each moment to the fullest, she falls in love with a boy locked up in the local jail and befriends the town recluse.

Valerie Sherrard's new novel is a moving tale about a young woman experiencing the best days of her life, all the while aware that the time she has left is rapidly disappearing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Poignant Novel, Aug 21 2005
By
This review is from: Kate (Paperback)
I read Kate together with my book club at school. I recommended it in the first place, already having read Mrs. Sherrard's Shelby Belgarden mysteries (which I loved).

It was a quick and wonderful read. I found that when I was reading, it became increasingly harder to put it down. I'd even neglect my homework to continue reading it.

Kate is so real - and incredibly brave. She was fourteen, and she was dying. Having someone so young, under the worst circumstances, being so optimistic about life was just incredible. I also enjoyed reading about her life - her parents, her falling-out with her best friend Josie, the town recluse (whom Kate befriends), and who could forget Randy, Kate's love interest. Everything tied in together nicely, and I liked the diary first-person format. It made everything that much more personal and real.

The other members of the book club also enjoyed the book. We all thought Kate was admirable - someone to be highly commended for her bravery, strength, and overall optimism of life, even though she was dying.

However, the book was very sad and heart-wrenching at times. I shed a few tears at the end - so be sure to keep a box of tissues nearby!

Thank you, Mrs. Sherrard, for writing such a poignant and wonderful story.

Kate was a fantastic read. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow, Jan 6 2005

This book is amazing. The story is told from the perspective of Kate herself and she feels like a real person, someone you'd love to get to know. It's not a lighthearted book, in fact at the end, I was crying. But the writing is wonderful and this book is definitely a treasure, something to read over and over again. I know I will.
