5.0 out of 5 stars As funny as they come! Feb. 7 2010
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Kath and Kim is just another in a long line of great TV shows that had the plug pulled way too prematurely.I was never a Molly Shannon fan until this came along. She played Selma Blair's mom and the two of them lived together. The show was refreshing in that they actually got along and enjoyed each other. The supporting cast was stellar,it was well written and very, very funny. It's just a shame that it was never given the chance to develop a good following, but now that it's on DVD I can see it all over again.I would recommend this show to people who like clever, witty fluff when you just want to turn off your brain and have a good laugh.Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Series May 1 2010

I watched this series as I was hosptialized for three months. I looked forward to seeing it every week because it was one of the funniest series ever on TV. Very overlooked. Wish it could have had a longer run. Oh well, every episode is a gem. All the actors were great. Sad to see it go, but happy I have the series on DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious! Too bad the series was canceled. Jan. 30 2010

Kath & Kim was one of the best comedies on television in 2009. John Michael Higgins' and Selma Blair's characters are an absolute riot. Unfortunately, the show didn't get picked up for renewal in 2010 and NBC has since removed the old episodes from Hulu.com and the NBC.com website so the only way to watch the old episodes is by getting the DVD. The Season 1 DVD compilation is great, too. There are a handful of extra features that are worth watching as well. Definitely recommend this DVD to all the Kath & Kim fans out there.

1.0 out of 5 stars Do you love second rate imitations that completely miss the point of what they're imitating? Then u might like this, god help u. Oct. 2 2011

Why oh why do moronic American companies keep trying to copy other people's ideas for tv programs when they've clearly missed the point of what made the original good in the first place? The Australian original is an absolute gem of comedy but much of it's humour centred around the fact that the main characters were overweight, badly dressed, greasy haired unattractive clueless suburbanites convinced that they were the bee's knees. So what do the American copycats do? They replace all the characters with skinny beautiful people who would look at home on a catwalk! The eternally injured or diseased or rash covered sport-obsessed but fat second best friend of the daughter has been left out of the show altogether!! A huge proportion of the comedy hinged on her adorable but tragic and bad-luck-stricken character, especially where the daughter Kim was concerned, as she constantly bullied her second best friend and convinced herself she was beautiful and stylish simply by comparison. I'm guessing even the American execs couldn't find a way to turn this character into a supermodel so decided to ignore her and delete the character instead. When are these twits going to realise you don't make a successful show by copying someone else's title then replacing everyone with beautiful people! This show is cringeworthy to see. None of the original humour makes any sense now that all the characters are slim and beautiful. The original actors wore awful wigs and bad make up and terrible ill fitting clothes that exaggerated their love handles on purpose. Did you think they just didn't know how to style hair and wear clothes? Did you think that these things were flaws that needed fixing? The bad camera angles and cheap lighting were part of the humour. That was the point. You can't make an American version with expensive sets and great lighting and flattering wigs and slim beautiful actors because that was the point of the original. It was supposed to look cringeworthy and awful! That was the joke! There is none of the over the top melodramatic acting that was played so straight that it almost looks like the bad acting wasn't intentional that makes the original so funny. The show is as dull and humourless as the vacuous underwear models it appears to have styled it's replacement characters on. Not that the actors are bad, they've been fantastic in other roles and programs but the American obsession with having to make all programs with actors who look perfect and beautiful means that they are all completely miscast in this sitcom and destroy the whole premise of the comedy. One of the three main characters isn't even present anymore so a third of the comedy is missing before the title sequence has even finished. Is it any wonder the series got cut several episodes short and any plans for a second season were cancelled? Duh! Comedy is funnier with flawed characters!!! Thats what makes it funny!!!!! That means if you make comedy with beautiful, slim, shiny toothed, muscle bound or pert breasted model look a likes it won't be funny. Beautiful people aren't funny. Flawed people are funny. People who win you over despite their flaws are funny. People who can take the mickey out of themselves and their flaws are funny. Beautiful people trying to look beautiful and save face and be stars aren't funny. Do you get it yet? Are any of the big American studios who keep copying other countries shows just because you read they were doing well and thought you could make money by buying the rights to the name and making an improved version by using a bigger budget and better looking actors get it yet? As if they ever will. Good and loyal citizens of America your tv companies are ripping you off with these appalling thoughtless attempts at imitation comedy. Would you pay more money for a fake gucci handbag than for a genuine one? I'm guessing not, but that's exactly what the studios keep doing when they chuck money into these pale imitations of other people's shows. Anyone remember them trying to make a US version of absolutely fabulous? Let's do it without the drugs and alcohol they thought. Missing the point once again do we think? Yeah enough said. This series is just the same. Thank god the series got cancelled before it could do any more damage to the reputation of the original Kath and Kim. Please go and watch the fantastic and glorious australian original so you can see what an appalling and pale imitation this pile of tripe really is.

4.0 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT, UNDERRATED SHOW Dec 9 2011
By R.S. - Published on Amazon.com

They really should have named this show something else so people would not compare it to the AU version. The show should be judged for what it is (or was) and not compared to the other one. Having said that... This show is freakin' hilarious and full of sharp wit. I have to rewind parts sometimes to catch certain things. The show constantly makes fun of itself and is unashamedly campy. Molly Shannon and Selma Blair have great chemistry, and John Michael Higgins as Phil has some of the best lines EVER. Anyway, this show is extremely under-rated and under-appreciated. I guess if you don't "get it" you just don't get it. Too bad.

By the way, I have never seen the Aussie version but really want to.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Greatly Appreciated DVD Release For An Unappreciated Show! March 21 2011

SNL's Molly Shannon and Hellboy's Selma Blair are the sassy fashionistas Kath & Kim. John Michael Higgins and Mikey Day are Phil and Craig, the men who worship them. And this 2-DVD set is Kath & Kim - Season 1 from Universal Studios Home Entertainment.

Based on the Australian series of the same name, NBC's Kath & Kim (like The Office) was met with criticism from fans and critics of the original series who failed to appreciate what the cast & crew of the brilliantly funny NBC version had to offer. Too bad, because this show had the potential to run as long as the shows of Molly Shannon's fellow former SNLers Julia Louis-Dreyfus (The New Adventures of Old Christine), Tina Fey (30 Rock), and Amy Poehler (Parks & Recreation). It was unfortunate that NBC didn't give Kath & Kim the chance to grow with viewers as the network did with The Office. Had fans and critics spent less time condemning the creative differences between the two versions rather than accepting them on their merits, who knows? Fortunately for devoted fans of NBC's Kath & Kim who actually get the show, Universal has neatly preserved the series in a quality DVD set with great extras. The episodes look and sound great. The commentaries are fun and highly informative. Overall, a great set. Well done, Universal.

Guest stars include: Ellia English ("The Jamie Foxx Show"), Stephanie Courtney (a pre-Flo the Progressive Insurance girl), Catherine Reitman (daughter of director Ivan Reitman), Maya Rudolph ("Saturday Night Live"), singer Wynonna Judd, Jennifer Coolidge ("Joey", "American Pie"), comedian Ron "Tater Salad" White, Yvette Nicole Brown ("Community"), April Bowlby ("Two And A Half Men"), Michael McDonald ("Mad TV"). Look for a cameo appearance from series Co-executive Producer Will Calhoun as the fireman in the season finale "Home".

Kath & Kim is a 2-disc (single-sided) set featuring all 17 episodes from the season in Anamorphic Widescreen (1.78:1) video; English Dolby Digital 5.1 audio; English subtitles for the deaf & hearing-impaired; plus the following Special Features: Deleted Scenes, Gag Reel, and Audio Commentaries with stars Molly Shannon, Selma Blair, Mikey Day, and John Michael Higgins; Executive Producer Michelle Nader; and Co-Writers Adam Barr, Jim Dubensky, and Steve Gabriel. The discs (which feature a "cutout" of the show's logo on a pink background) are housed in a 2-disc amaray case. Here are the episodes, and how the discs will be configured:

Disc 1:

2. Respect
