Five seasons of tormenting and being tormented by your best friend must be tough. Even tougher must be coming up with novel competitions with that best friend. Kenny Vs. Spenny, another hilarious product of Canada, is starting to run a little low on gas in its fifth season. It's still quite good and full of surprises, but a couple episodes here were duds. Read on!
The whole premise, if you didn't know, is that Kenny and his best friend Spenny compete to see who is "the best" at something. The competitions are often painful, often gross, sometimes involve actual skill, and always involve strategy. Kenny usually cheats, Spenny usually plays too honestly. The loser has to suffer a humiliation. Here's a breakdown of season 5.
1. Who Can Keep a Dump in their Pants the Longest?
Very funny, very gross, very KVS. Both Kenny and Spenny have great strategies. *****
2. Who Can Bone More Women?
One of the most classic of all Kenny dupes. Pretty gross. Pretty funny. Hard to watch! ****
3. Who Can Wear a Gorilla Suit the Longest?
I found this tedious in that "seen it already" kind of way. An episode to skip. *
4. Who Can Piss Off More People?
Back in fine form, what could be funnier than Kenny pissing people off? Spenny trying to piss people off, is what! Both do an excellent job! ****
5. First Guy to Touch the Ground Loses
A terrible premise ended up being my second favourite episode of the season. First guy to touch the ground? Sounds as bad as first guy to get a stain, from previous years. However, things take a surprising turn when Kenny takes on the persona of a James Bond villain with a sidekick...a loaf of bread, name "Ryan". Bad competition, but fantastic episode. Kenny's just plain funny. *****
6. Who's the Best Pro Wrestler?
Very silly episode thanks to Kenny who doesn't take the competition seriously at all. The presence of the Iron Sheik (who is nuts, crazy, out of his mind, by the way!) makes the episode a winner. ****
7. Who's the Best Soldier?
Good premise, and Kenny is very funny, but it was a little too contrived and the basic training they endured had little to do with what a soldier must actually go through. It was still done with respect, but this episode was a dud. **
8. Who's the Better Jew?
Decent premise, but not as hilarious as it could have been. ***
9. Who Do Disabled People Like More?
I quite like the humiliation in this one! ****
10. Who Can Smoke More Weed?
I personally think there's nothing funnier than watching a bunch of stoned guys think they are funny. If that's your thing, you'll love this episode. My favourite. *****
As usual, there are bonus features on the DVD, but not many. The deleted scenes are a mixed bag, and there are three commentaries -- but not on every episode. All commentaries however are revealing and entertaining as Sebby pointed out in his review. And I believe Sebby is on the crew commentaries.
Kenny Vs. Spenny season 5 is a decent season, not bad, but underwhelming. I don't know how long the boys can keep this show going, but stay tuned for season 6!
Four stars.
