Product Description

From Library Journal

Wyatt Matthews, a wealthy corporate lawyer, quits his job and signs on as a public defender in this latest from Freedman, whose House of Smoke (LJ 12/95) was a best seller.

From Booklist

Lawyer Wyatt Matthews has a thriving practice, a glitzy house, a sleek car, and a beautiful wife. So why does he feel unfulfilled? Not enough "real life." So he takes a leave from his lucrative law firm, signs on with the public defender, and takes on the seemingly unwinnable case of teenage drug dealer Marvin White. In jail for robbery, White tries to impress a fellow prisoner by claiming to be the serial killer responsible for the deaths of half a dozen prostitutes. But the prisoner who hears White's confession is a snitch who uses his scoop to his own advantage. Only Wyatt, with a skeleton staff and none of the resources his old firm offered, can help prove White's innocence and convict the real killer. The author of Against the Wind (1991), Freedman, a Grisham wanna-be with some talent, has concocted a tale filled with unusual twists and a megadose of suspense. But a complacent, self-satisfied hero, who has an unfortunate need to make Important Statements about Life, weakens this potentially powerful thriller considerably, as does a plethora of distracting sidebar plots. Still, it makes diverting reading and may draw enough Grisham and Turow fans to generate demand. Emily Melton --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Novel...., Jun 21 2004

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Key Witness (Paperback)
Having read the first 4 Grisham novels, years ago, I wondered while reading "Key Witness," why J.F. Freedman doesn't have the fame that Grisham has.

J.F. Freedman is significantly better at plot and character development, than Grisham.

I truly couldn't turn my pages fast enough, as I read "Key Witness."

And from the first page, I could envision, feel and hear the plot.

I especially related to the the lead attorney, who though he had no experience in criminal cases, he was willing to put his multi-millionaire corporate practice on hold for 6 months, to defend, pro bono, a miss-guided, 18-year-old defendant.

The 6 months taught this attorney about life, through the eyes of people who he would have never otherwise be intimate with.

His 6 months also influenced change in many who had previously put their aspirations on hold.

This is a wonderful novel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another good summer read, Jun 27 2002

This was my second J. F. Freedman book I have read and am ready to buy his other books. He is a good storyteller and the plot always thickens. His writing skills keep you turning the pages unable to put the book down. This book was enjoyable because there was much more action than just courtroom drama.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good story; amateurish writing, Jun 11 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Key Witness (Paperback)
This was my first Freedman novel and I found the story fun; but there were factual errors and basic writing gaffes which detracted from the experience. Some phrases were straight out of a bad romance novel, for example, "She was a beast; but when he closed his eyes, she was a woman." Is the author still in high school?

Dialog for some characters was inconsistent and in some cases, overly stereotyped. For pure entertainment, it was fine; but if you're looking for a well-written novel, there are plenty of others to choose from.
