A Masteful Tale of Crime and Justice,

William Deverell is a westcoast crime writer and former lawyer who has delivered another rough-and-tumble, knock-him-down, no-holds-barred thriller of a story. Without relating the details of this sordidly complex tale, I am going to give you ten reasons why you might want to pick this book up for a read or leave it alone:1)The story is mainly cast in a BC/Westcoast setting involving Vancouver and the Gulf Islands. Many of the geographical nameplaces have been changed not to distract the reader from missing the real point of the plot; 2)The general plot is very well laid out in terms of a identifiable timeline. Deverell is good at doing this because this how good lawyers operate when making a case in court; 3)Most of the key characters have another side to them that puts them at odds with the legal world that they find themselves mired in; 4)The book is written in the parlance of the courtroom - some jargon and lots of latin aphorisms; 5)There are many inter-woven sub-plots in the story that I found myself having to reread some parts in order to reconnect with main strand; 6)Like in "Needles", a form of justice does prevail in how the judicial system handles the criminal world. Characters have to answer to their consciences over some big-ticket items; 7)Deverell develops his characters very methodically. If you stick with them they either live up or live down to your expectations, but never will they bore you; 8)Be prepared to change your mind on the question of "who did it"; 9)The author writes well in terms of supply lively dialogue; 10)Deverell is probably one of the best Canadian we have in this genre of writing.

Great West Coast Mystery,

Recently I picked up Kill All The Judges by William Deverell. Several BC judges have been killed and no one knows if it is just a coincidence. Cudworth Brown, a backwoods, uncouth poet from Gabriolla Island is accused of killing Justice Whynet-Moir. Brown is being represented by Brian Pomeroy, a hotshot lawyer who has gone off the rails after his divorce. He is now on cocaine, is delusional, and is writing a creative non-fiction mystery about the case. After Pomeroy runs from the courtroom on the first day, Arthur Beauchamp, a fellow islander, is reluctantly recruited to come out of retirement and represent Brown. Beauchamp has better things to do: he has a farm to run, his wife is running as the federal Green Party representative, and he is given only three days to prepare for the major trial. That, and he does not like Brown.First off, I have to say that Deverell has an amazing vocabulary and his use of language is wonderful to read. Also, Deverell was a lawyer himself and has an obvious familiarity with the legal system. I also loved his descriptions of the islands and Vancouver, places where I have spent time. I enjoyed reading this book, especially the different levels of the story. I liked how Deverell used Pomeroy's mental breakdown and novel writing to create different aspects to the story and move the plot along. Some of this was even quite funny. However, there are four different voices in the book and at first it was a bit confusing, but I found it did not take long to figure it out. The dialogue was great as well and the characters all developed nicely. There were some good surprises and some of the minor characters were good as well. I would recommend this book to anyone who like murder mystery or legal books.

Brilliant. Brilliant. A superb book that gives its reader many things: laughter, a good, tight mystery and an insider's view of the real - and frequently corrupt - world of lawyers and judges.Why William Deverell is not a household name in Canada is somebody's - somewhere- fault. This is very good writing and I strongly recommend it. Declan Hill |
