Everything old is new again in Tarantino's humor-laced vision: he steals from the best while injecting his own oft-copied, never-duplicated style into what is, quite simply, a revenge flick, beginning with the near-murder of the Bride (Uma Thurman), pregnant on her wedding day and left for dead by the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad (or DiVAS)--including Lucy Liu and the unseen David Carradine (as Bill)--who become targets for the Bride's lethal vengeance. Attendu, espéré même depuis près de six ans, Kill Bill est le nouveau long-métrage de l’enfant terrible du cinéma américain: Quentin Tarantino. Convaincu par ses producteurs de couper son œuvre en deux, il s’amuse avec les appétits avides des spectateurs en n’en livrant que le premier volume. Black Mamba, alias The Bride, est bien décidée à se venger de ceux qui l’ont plongée dans le coma pour 4 ans: le Deadly Viper Assassination Squad, dirigé par son ancien fiancé Bill. Il ne fait alors pas bon se trouver sur la liste de cette Némésis moderne. Quentin Tarantino est en forme, son Kill Bill le prouve. Divisé en chapitres ne suivant pas l’ordre temporel traditionnel, chacun illustrant un genre cher au cœur du réalisateur (western spaghetti, blackploitation, film de sabre, manga…), le film stylise avec un humour ravageur la violence inhérente au projet de son héroïne. Interprétée avec beaucoup de sex-appeal et de détermination par Uma Thurman, Black Mamba affronte alors d’autres guerrières auxquelles Lucy Liu, Daryl Hannah et Vivica A. Fox prêtent joliment leurs traits. Après Pam Grier, Tarantino confirme qu’il aime filmer les femmes, qui le lui rendent bien d’ailleurs. En réalité, malgré quelques longueurs et problèmes de rythme, Kill Bill vol.1 est un film dynamique, entraînant et surprenant, finissant sur un véritable suspens qui ne se résoudra que dans le volume deux. Like most of Tarantino's films, Kill Bill Vol. 1 is over-hyped and highly over-rated. I found myself wishing for this rather boring film to end, especially because a large chunk of the movie is spent filling in 'back story' to one-dimensional characters whom I didn't care about. The kung fu is second rate, especially because it is performed by average-joe Hollywood actors. You can tell that Tarantino is trying desperately to be cool, but instead he falls flat on his face by producing this lame duck of a movie. Without good fight scenes, the movie must rely on plot to drive it forward. Since Kill Bill substitutes information for plot, it is one torturous sitting. In short: this movie is craptastic. Only watch it if you don't have to pay any money.

I am giving the movie only 1 star because of the domestic DVD version of this film. BEWARE!! The movie itself is an awesome film. However, the Japanese release and DVD contain far more detail. Not only is the Japanese version 3 minutes longer, but the Yakuza fight scene is filmed entirely in COLOR. Furthermoe, the Japanese version contains the graphic trunk dismemberment scene of Uma cutting off the other arm of the assistant. The Japanese DVD contains all the same features, and much more! Don't be fooled by the domestic release!

Call me "unfashionable" but I thought this was a waste of time, money, film and otherwise good actors' time. Alex, I'll take 'gratuitous bloodletting' for a thousand. It was everything, especially the "flying humans" of Crouching Tiger, you've ever seen done all over again. Ho hum. I simply could not be more sick of violence; it bothers me, and carries no "entertainment" value whatsoever. Give me Dances with Wolves, Farenheit 9/11, Forrest Gump or Field of Dreams anyday. This was just plain awful. If zero stars were available as an option, I'd have chosen it.
