Product Description

From Amazon

When Jack Reacher suddenly decides to ask a Greyhound bus driver to let him off near the town of Margrave, Georgia, he thinks it's because his brother once mentioned that the famed blues guitarist Blind Blake died there. But it doesn't take long for the footloose ex-military policeman to discover that there are plenty of strange--and very dangerous--things going on behind Margrave's manicured lawns and clean streets that demand his attention. This first thriller by a former television writer features some of the best-written scenes of action in recent memory, a crash course in currency and counterfeiting, and a hero who is just begging to be called on for an encore.

From Library Journal

The transient Jack Reacher finds himself in tiny Margrave, Georgia, and is almost immediately arrested, if briefly, as a murder suspect. Imagine his surprise when he discovers that one of the victims is his brother, a brilliant U.S. Treasury agent. Reacher himself is no slouch; a former military policeman, he can dispatch villains with an astonishing array of weapons, including various parts of his body. In the company of a straight-arrow detective and a beautiful lady cop, Reacher soon unearths a conspiracy stretching through the little town and beyond. Blood flows freely, terrible threats are made and carried out, and body parts accumulate. First novelist Child, a former television writer, stretches coincidence outrageously in this would-be noir outing, whose hero is creepily amoral, violent, and generally unpleasant. Only large pop fiction collections need consider.?Elsa Pendleton, Boeing Information Svcs., Ridgecrest, Cal.

5.0 out of 5 stars In a word.......................WOW, Feb 20 2004
By
Cory D. Slipman (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Lee Child in his initial novel Killing Floor beautifully crafts a masterful thriller in the action adventure genre. Child's plot simmers just like his hero Jack Reacher slowly but unavoidably reaching the boiling point.

Reacher, a 35 year old honorably discharged veteran military policeman is currently living a hobo's existence cruising around the country by bus. A blues afficiando, while passing through Georgia he remembers having heard that legendary blues guitarist Blind Blake had passed away in the small town of Margrave. With nothing presssing in his schedule, he gets off the bus and hikes 14 miles to check out the town.

While having breakfast in the local diner he is arrested as a suspect in a local murder that has just been uncovered. Another suspect Paul Hubble, a local investment banker, is also brought in for questioning. Both Reacher and Hubble are sent to the local prison while their alibis are checked. While incarcerated they are almost murdered by the inmates in a very suspicious fashion.

Reacher is released and soon learns that the murder victim is none other than his older brother Joe, a U.S. Treasury agent. Nosing around town he manages to stumble into a brilliant criminal scheme headed by a wealthy and devious Mr. Kliner. Kliner owns 4 large warehouses and fronts a foundation that dumps truckloads of money into the upkeep of Margrave and its citizens.

Reacher soon learns of the widespread corruption in the town including Mayor Teale and Chief of Police Morrisson. He befriends Chief detective Finlay who along with Officer Roscoe, a soon to be Reacher love interest, aid him in avenging his brother's murder and cleaning up the town.

Child creates an empathetic and cunning hero in Reacher who using his vast experience and resources embarks on a very satisfying campaign of vengeance. I will absolutely be sure to continue reading the books in this series

4.0 out of 5 stars But did you know there really was a Blind Blake?, July 9 2004

I loved this book from the first page. I devoured this book, unable to put it down. I read it in less than a week which is saying a lot for me. I liked Jack Reacher a lot. He's got a past, he's not all good, but he's the good guy. "Sometimes good guys don't wear white." If were to compare him to any character, I'd say John McClane from Die Hard or even Blondie from The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (the greatest Western ever made!). He's a bad ass you have to like. He is the anti-hero you want to see in any action flick.

I found the other characters likeable but not very deep. Part of this is because Child never explores them much, this is after all a jack Reacher novel, and in part because they all have single-name names, Roscoe, Finlay, Hubble. I didn't mind. I found it easy to follow and not confuse characters. The bad guys were stock, smarmy, and slimy, straight out of The Dukes of Hazzard, easy to hate.

The back cover mentions the brutal violence. Many reviewers mentioned the extreme violence. I didn't think that the violence was all that bad. When its there, its quick and brutal, sure, but its not like its in every chapter, a non-stop Quentin Tarantino ode to violence. Certainly not any worse than the Bourne Identity or Point of Impact. Perhaps thin skinned people shouldn't read thrillers.

While a minor, minor subplot, though really the anchor of the book, I did enjoy the faint tangent of Reacher searching for the story of blues legend Blind Blake. It added just a hint of depth to Reacher.

Overall, a great book. If you are a Tarantino fan, if you loved Die Hard, if you like a fast paced no holds barred action-thriller, you will love this book. Ignore the petty detail stuff like the shrugging and simple names. Otherwise, try Robert Ludlum or Stephen Hunter. I have to admit I am tempted to read the next Jack Reacher novel, after all I want to find the answer to "all Jack knows is he didn't kill anybody. Not in their town, and not for a long time..."

5.0 out of 5 stars Blew me away, Jun 18 2004
By A Customer
I must agree with some of the other reviews that the book contains minor quirks, excessive shrugging, and continual short, choppy sentences. However, the plot was one of the best that I have read in years. I only wish I had picked this up when it was originally published, because I now have some catching up to do with the Reacher series.
