Soul-searching diary of Lt. Frederick Downs' tour of duty,
By Ronald Stephen Hansell (Indianapolis, Indiana) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Killing Zone (Hardcover)
The easy style of writing about this hard topic, and the fact that it is a true account and not a sensationalized account of Downs' and his platoon's experiences during his 1967-68 tour, made it very comfortable to read but will make it hard for me to forget. The questionable triumphs and unquestionable tragedies of the operations, and the intelligent consideration of the policies and tactical operations mirrored my own experiences In Country, and Downs' reflective and somewhat self-appraising warts-and-all style give appropriate respect to and criticism of the men of Delta 1/6. It's a lick on us.

This review is from: Killing Zone (Paperback)
I've read many first-person accounts on the Vietnam War and this one definitely ranks near the top with "A Rumor of War" and "The Cat From Hue." It captivated me from the start, brought me back in time 40+ years, and truly left me emotionally wrung out, something only great writers can achieve!!!

"My favorite book about the Vietnam War!",
By Dave (Tennessee United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Killing Zone (Paperback)
Having read tons of war books including many memoirs from veterans about the Vietnam War, I can tell you that this is by far the best personal narrative about soldier life in Vietnam. It's so easily readable & gripping that once I started it I couldn't put it down! I can't believe the author, Frederick Downs, not only survived his numorous wounds but also wrote two books about his experience! I also recommend Aftermath by Downs, a "sequal" to The Killing Zone that continues the story of his life after returning to the U.S. If you are even remotely interested in the Vietnam War, then this is a book you must read! Highly recommended.
