I have been hearing about how wonderful Kindles are for several years and decided to buy the latest Kindle Fire HD to use in my classroom. The price point was great, much more affordable than an iPad, and I was very keen to utilize the Immersion Reading which syncs a Kindle e-book with excellent audio book recordings available from Audible. I have purchased probably close to 40 Audible books in the past few years and they are fantastic.

However, I soon became frustrated on the first day I had the Kindle out of the box as I couldn't find "Audiobooks" on the Home Menu. I also couldn't download the Audible app, which was supposed to be pre-loaded. I searched online for solutions but nothing mentioned worked. So I phoned Amazon support and spent the next hour and forty minutes being passed to 9 different reps from Amazon, Kindle, Audible, a Kindle "specialist", and no one had an answer. They were all baffled. The reps were all very nice and tried to be helpful but apparently none of them had been informed that this feature is not set up on the Kindle Fire HD in Canada. It is a U.S. feature only, which is very strange because I have downloaded the Audible app on my computer, laptop, iPhone, and iPad and they all work fine. And to top it off, when I search in the Kindle Settings and look at Apps Installed, it says that Audible is installed!!! But somehow it has been blocked by Kindle.

So in the end, I have a little tablet that will download e-books and search the web, and not really anything else that's special or remarkable. Too bad because the Whisper Sync and Immersion Reading sound fantastic. Come on Amazon, you're a huge company with lots of resources - surely you can figure this out.

The tablet works fine, etc., but I am quite dissapointed that the features I thought I'd be getting are not available to me as I am Canadian.

Im sure this Kindle is great - if you live in the States. Many of the functions that we wanted to use this product for were not available to us in Canada, so we returned it.

No stars and worse. How can Amazon be so good at so many things and NOT ADVISE CANADIAN CUSTOMERS THAT THE AUDIBLE BOOKS WILL NOT WORK ON THEIR KINDLE FIRE. PLEASE DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT, PERHAPS ADVICE AND PERHAPS A SOLUTION????

I realize that not everyone will find this review helpful to them unless they are like myself looking for certain features not available in the competitions e-readers. I edited this review to further explain to those people what may be of value to read about my experience. I also want to add after more time to think about it that the fact Amazon did not contact me to assure me that in the future that Amazon would resolve the issue of information on Kindle advertising and Audible advertising would explain incompatibility in Canada has further disenchanted me when it comes to purchasing anything more from Amazon. I was a happy customer who spent a lot of money for years on Amazon. Now I cancel orders family members make on my account when I see they ordering anything.

I am very disappointed in an otherwise seemingly great product, (although I only spent an hour exploring its capability), I would have given 5 stars for price and quality from that short experience with it but after much frustration discovered that I can not have all the benefits promised when you purchase audio books from Audible and Kindle books. They are suppose to both be Amazon company stores but even after repeated calls to both contact numbers neither knew how to make it work. After admitting that there isn't the proper explanation on either website to the fact it doesn't work in Canada and that the Amazon app nor Android app either do not exist in Canada or in Androids case are incompatible with Kindle Fire HD I was left with the option of returning it. Everyone was courteous but the information wasn't available to these employee's because Amazon hasn't been honest about what works in Canada and what doesn't.

The final disappointment of the day was finding out they can not send me a pre-paid return label.

I purchased my Kindle Fire as soon as it came out in Canada. At first, I was delighted. I played games and read magazines on it. Unfortunately, I found that that is all that I could do. I purchased a couple of books, but they are very difficult to read. I even found magazines difficult to read, but I only spend a few hours at most reading a magazine whereas when I tried to read a book for several hours, my eyes would get very sore. Probably the Kindle Paperwhite is a better is a better deal for reading books. However, the Kindle Paperwhite does NOT work with Canadian libraries. (Neither, for that matter, does the Kindle Fire, but I knew that prior to making my purchase.) The worse thing about the Kindle Fire, however, is something that Amazon does not advertise. It uses a very limited Web browser (Silk) that will not let you enter a lot of web sites. For example, you will not be able to enter your g-mail account if you have one. Also, I am taking an online course (not connected in any way to Google) and I am unable to log into that course. Unless Kindle soon finds a way to include the more popular web browsers in its Kindle Fire, it will soon lose its market share to Android devices that do allow the full range of web browsing.
