I was debating between a Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HDX, and ultimately decided on the latter due to my investment in the Amazon ecosystem and my general dislike for vanilla Android. I was willing to give up a mature ecosystem (Google Play) for Amazon's still maturing app store in the name of full integration with Amazon services; however that is sadly not the case. The integration is sub-par at best.

Now, I was aware some (key) services such as the Amazon Cloud Player and Prime Videos are not available to Canadians, however, what I didn't expect was the poor integration with Amazon Cloud Drive. The docs tab shows documents and the photos tab shows photos from your cloud drive and that is it. There is no holistic view of your cloud drive where you can browse all your files. The videos tab does not let you see videos on your cloud drive as one would expect, only pics (and in that sense is not any different from the photos tab).

There are no surprises with Kindle Books. They look beautiful on the screen with the exception of a glowing blue light against white pages around the inside edges of the device (apparently this is not a defect but by design). Although the super high resolution of the screen renders the text sharply, the surrounding glow (similar to an x-ray viewing machine in your doctor's office) is distracting. But I don't expect anyone buying this device for the sole purpose of reading. For occasional reading it is ok. The integration with goodreads (after the recent update) is very minimal but I am guessing that will get better with time.

The app situation is not as bad as I expected, as you can sideload or download any android apk and it should work as long as it is not tied to Google services.

I don't normally review products but this one is particularly offensive. A little part of me would die if Amazon managed to trick someone in to buying the Kindle Fire HDX. It's appalling that they're advertising the product on their front page.

The HDX is an Amazon ecosystem powerhouse. It's actually pretty great, according to reviews. One problem though, there is no Amazon ecosystem in Canada! Canadians don't have access to Prime Instant Video so you can forget about all that screen sharing stuff and cool IMDB integration you may have heard about. There is no Amazon MP3, you can't even store your music in the cloud. Even our Kindle e-book ecosystem is incomplete in that we can't borrow books nor do we have access to Kindle FreeTime. Oh, and let's not forget that this year's marquee feature, Mayday, isn't available to Canadians.

Those are just some of the features unavailable to Canadians. And yet, somehow, they feel justified selling this fairly useless item for more than they charge in the US. Wow. Amazon is a big company, they have the capability to make deals with media companies but they don't care. Don't reward them.

If you are looking for an inexpensive tablet, the Google Nexus 7 starts at about $249. If you want a productivity and media powerhouse take a look at an iPad.

I received my device very fast from Amazon, which was great. The hardware was as expected, very nicely built, beautiful screen (although not so sure about the super duper HDX that it's supposed to have, and there is a bluish tint to the ereader), and the speakers are about the best I've ever heard - maybe even better than my home stereo. I had read a lot of reviews and watched many YouTube video reviews about the limitations of using the device in Canada, but still learned that we have access to tons of content, so I decided to go ahead with it. However, be careful. The MayDay feature that is being touted and pushed in all reviews and videos IS NOT AVAILABLE IN CANADA. I spoke with Amazon Customer Service and they confirmed that it's only available in the US but I believe that it should be clearly stated on the product listing on that the Mayday feature is not available outside the US.

Finally, and I pretty much knew this as well but nonetheless it's frustrating, there is no native app for YouTube.

If all you want is an expensive e-reader this is your toy. If you want a table that gives you access to multimedia content go with Android, Apple or Surface you won't get it from Amazon Canada.

As a etailer to Canadians Amazon is fails on the tablet front.

Well, I have had Windows Tablets since 2003 - currently also have a Windows RT. But I keep buying Android devices thinking they will improve and actually be able to do stuff. Wrong! I guess it is OK for reading downloaded books but this thing is for kids or the totally technically challenged. My wife wanted one as well, (less geeky than me,) to buy books! It has sat unused for months, while she uses the little portable Windows laptop everyday.

I don't know what to say, I was hoping this would be worth the money but it has obtuse setting controls, doesn't have any apps that are more than a step above kids toys and has been even made even less useable for anything but lite use in the recent childish changes to the Amazon cloud.

Really my Windows Nokia phone is more robust than this thing.

Save your money get a Windows Surface.
