Product Description

From Booklist

Destitute young Sara Cobb takes a position as governess for one of her least favorite people, the impulsive and spoiled Ileana Brashear, but is warned off by a chance-met fellow traveler, the unsavory but darkly attractive poacher known as Gren Martyn. She subsequently discovers that young women from the area, a desolate region of Cornwall where the principal industry, mining, has collapsed, are disappearing without a trace and that her aristocratic but extremely unpleasant employer, the lecherous Sir Kenneth, may be involved. Butler's newest historical, relying for its setting on the natural landscape rather than on any specific time period in British history, offers several intriguing elements and is very pointed in its treatment of landowners' rights versus the claims of their dependents, the hazards of mining for those working in the pits, and other social issues of the time, while providing a gothic atmosphere and a nonconsummated romance in a darkly impressionistic tale. 3.0 out of 5 stars Better than average, Nov 20 2004

Miss Sara Cobb is on her way to Cornwall to become a governess--little does she know what awaits her. During her travels, she meets a handsome stranger who cryptically warns her of strange goings-on in her employer's home. Even if governesses WEREN'T disappearing at Tregallion House, she would have enough to contend with, including a bratty charge, a stern mistress, and a handsy Sir Kenneth.

Grenville Martyn tried to warn Sara of the seedy business going on at her new employer's abode. For some odd reason (maybe the fact that he has a past history with the master of Tregallion?) he deigns to keep an eye on her. Even more odd, he finds himself attracted to the prim little governess...

It's almost impossible to describe the plot without revealing anything crucial. A hint of mystery is always looming. There were a lot of things I liked about the book, and a lot of things I didn't. I never truly felt like I got to know Gren's character, and what I did know of him, I didn't always like. The book seemed the drag in parts, and was a bit melodramatic. However, I did enjoy the mystery aspects. And I enjoyed the unexpected secondary romance, even though it wasn't key to the plot. Plus, it was refreshing to have a hero who wasn't a rich, titled gentleman.

With Nancy Butler, you really can't go wrong. She'll always be one of my favorite Regency writers, even if she hasn't been up to her usual standards. I enjoyed "Kindness of a Rogue", but it's not one of her best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic--worth every penny!!, Sep 1 2006

Nancy Butler's writing is at its finest in this Regency Romance. Miss Sara Cobb is an unemployed governess, currently on her way to take up a post in Cornwall with a former student. Mr. Grenville Martyn is a dashing rogue who warns Sara away from her destination, Tregallion House. She ignores his warning and continues on her journey. Upon arriving at Tregallion, Sara discovers her student, Miss Ileana Brashear, is less than cooperative and her mother, Lady Brashear, has a vicious tongue. Sara befriends fellow Tregallion servants and Miss Addie Spindle and her brother, Tristan, who live not far from Tregallion. Sara and Gren's romance develops when Sara stumbles upon his farm on a ride one day. After sufficient probing, Sara discovers that young girls have been disappearing from Penwreath--the town that lies about 6 miles from Tregallion-- and all of them were heading to Plymouth. Sara begins to search for information, and begins to share Gren's suspicions that Sir Kenneth Brashear, her employer, is behind it all. In a whirlwind of activity, Sara finds herself falling in love with Gren, while at the same time, getting herself into dangerous situations. More than one relationship is developed in this novel, and Butler wraps up each nicely.

--> This novel was excellent. From the beginning to the end, I was enthralled the whole way. The action at the end was great. I'm a romantic- I LOVE happy endings and the scenes where the two main characters realize that they love each other. Nancy Butler does this wonderfully, and I would read it again in a heartbeat. You'll love this novel if you're a true Signet Regency Romance gal.

4.0 out of 5 stars Definitely not your formula Regency book., Jun 19 2007

It was so very refreshing to read this book. It did not resemble the average Regency romance in any way. The heroine is plain (but not as plain as she thinks), the hero is not titled or rich. He is however, quite the scoundrel and a rogue and a self confessed poacher. Not your usual mix for the man we are supposed to cheer for.

I really enjoyed the fact that none of the actions took place in London, in fact they didn't even take place in any large town or city. It was all in the Cornish countryside. Cornwall has a totally different feel from the rest of England. Perhaps only Yorkshire comes close to having as much wild, seemingly untamed spaces. There were also no balls with their endless descriptions of clothes to weigh this book down. It was a story based totally on the characters and the events taking place in their lives. The relationship of Sara Cobb and Grenville Martyn took center stage for the entire book. Their growing regard for each other was helped along by all the mysterious actions taking place and their collaboration to solve the puzzles and right the wrongs.

A cracking good read. This is my first book by Nancy Butler and I am already looking forward to the next one on my list. If I have anything negative to say, it would have to be that I really don't understand why Ms. Butler wrote the ending quite the way she did. Sara and Gren had already declared their love for one another. What was the reasoning for him to "surprise" her with his surprise? It sort of jarred for me because I didn't see the sense of it. Just to string the final scenes out a little? The exact same result could have been accomplished without making her wait for him. Oh, well. All in all, highly recommended.

By the way, if you are looking for "modern" Regency romance sex, sex, sex, and more sex scenes, you will not find them here. And all I can say to that is, THANK YOU VERY MUCH, MS BUTLER!! This one relies on good old fashioned writing skills to keep the reader entertained.
