Worth the Wildness!,

One of the difficulties with Stephen Hunt's books is that his worlds are populated with such wild creatures, magic and technology that it can sometimes be difficult to imagine it. But if you take the time to read through it - even if you can't quite picture everything - you will find a brilliant tale with robust, interesting characters, death-defying adventures, and a world so intricate and wild that will leave you breathless!As Hunt's second book, it is much easier to read than Court of the Air, the story is solid, the characters more believable and their motivations clearer. Kingdom Beyond the Waves is a delightful, intense, exciting read from front to back! I highly recommend it!

Profoundly entertaining,

More witty and clever read-it-in-a-single-weekend-sitting fiction from Stephen Hunt. This time, the adventure is one for the adults, with an Indiana Jones-like professor of history on the trail of a lost utopia along with the distant future's premiere rascal, u-boat pirate Jared Black.Things get desperate fairly fast, much in the same vein as Joe Abercrombie (I have to wonder if he read any of Hunt's books before writing his novels, and sucked up some of the dark sardonic energy they share). It's only my personal opinion, but I agree with those who have loved the Kingdom Beyond the Waves while completely disagreeing with the few readers who have criticized it. It manages a very hard balancing act, being both intelligent AND lowbrow high adventure at the same time. If you take it on those terms, I don't think you can go far wrong. Definitely worth a spot on your bookshelf. And forget e-books. With novels this physically good still being produced, it's got to be paper all the way for me.

Another majestic fantasy read,

The Kingdom Beyond the Waves is an incredibly accomplished fantasy adventure. The pace throughout gallops along, its characters are finely developed and the storyline has enough twists and turns to keep even a season thriller reader such as myself on the edge of my seat (and that takes a lot these days).In the book, Jared Black is drawn out of retirement with the promise of the salvaging of his priceless u-boat, and sent on a mission to find the location of a lost civilisation that held the keys to the perfect utopia. The mysterious commercial lord behind the trip is not all who he seems, and Blacky and his companions have to dredge the bottom of their resourcefulness to stay alive! Only the second in the series, it's a truly great novel that deserves all 5 stars and one of Hunt's best in my opinion.
