I don't know what these people are talking about when they are saying that its the same as the first one blah blah blah ... hmm if playing roxas (soras nobody) in the begining and having brand new worlds (lion king, mulan etc) AND new creatures (nobodys)is just like playing the first one then so be it haha you know it does have to have some qualities of the first one to be a sequal... derrr.. haha n e ways as you can tell I am crazy for these games... if I was to recommend one over the other it would be hard but I would say that the second one is top gaming... I love the new idea of having reaction commands they help out alot (especially when it comes to sephiroth)...Also the intoduction to Sora and Kairi's nobody who I think are way cute!! was an awesome touch...Also they made traveling in the gummi ship alot more fun XD and less confusing when it comes to building new ones... well I have rambled on enough I would Defiantely recommend this game for buying and playing over and over and over thank you for your time

(Review is based on the Japanese version of the game as the English version has yet to come out.)
Kingdom Hearts II (KH2) is an action roleplaying game featuring a wonderful marriage of characters and worlds from both Square Enix (Final Fantasy) and Disney. It's a sequel to both Kingdom Hearts and the GameBoy Advance "bridging story" Kingdom Hearts: Chains of Memories.
Now I had no thorough knowledge of the aforementioned two games, but its opening full-motion video presents the gamer with a brief synopsis of what went on via a montage of crucial plot points. Of course, none of it really makes complete sense without having the background of both KH and KH: CoM. (But hey, a simple Wikipedia search and even a search on plot spoilers on fan sites can quickly fill anyone in. :P)
I also had no real expectations for this title. So what exactly got me hooked onto Kingdom Hearts II? I have to say that it began with the mysteries that surrounded the first player character, Roxas. They certainly had me glued to my monitor and consequently, my PS2 doing overtime everyday as I played KH2 for hours on end.
The engrossing plot also unfolds with Roxas but seems to take a bit of a backseat once the familiar trio of Sora, Goofy, and Donald Duck come back to take the reigns of the story that began at the start of KH (re: finding King Mickey and Riku and looking for keyholes on worlds to seal to prevent the evil Heartless from entering them). And yes, the player character at this point is Sora.
The gameplay was a lot of fun and much of that is thanks to better camera controls. However, one may still find awkward situations where standing at a certain place gives you a strange viewpoint no matter how you move the camera.

If you haven't played the first one you'll probably not know much of what's going on. And that's even more so if you haven't played either Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories on the Gameboy Advance or it's enchance PS2 port Kingdom Hearts RE: Chain of Memories. It fills in the 1 year gap between the first KH and the second.

I highly recommend you play them both before playing this otherwise it's story is much harder to follow and less enjoyable.

The gameplay is much more fluid in KH2, but that also makes it much easier than the original. The magic was reduced to a refilling bar. When it runs out it regenerates, which also makes the game much easier. Which is either good or bad depending on who you ask. There are new actions to perform while in battle against bosses and certain enemies. Which unleash enemy specific counters. Different 'costumes' to transform into which grant Sora various boosts.

The game is also a lot more linear. None of the areas are confusing like the original Kingdom Hearts. Where Wonderland and Hallow Bastian were pretty confusing your first time through. [especially if you wanted to do everything in them] The more linear structure helps keep the story moving however. Which is the highlight of this game.

All I have to say is that, unlike Disney sequels, this game surpasses the original in almost every single way. The story is extremely captivating and the worlds and locations of various Disney worlds are great. In terms of gameplay, you just can't seem to stop. You are given brand new ways to fight enemies, including merging with other characters (such as Mulan, Jack Sparrow and Auron)and activating drives, which allowes Sora to weild two keyblades and attack enemies in different ways. Reaction commands also allow new ways to attack enemies. Unlike the first game, which left you wandering around the worlds without any clue of what you were supposed to be doing, KHII gives you a fully interactive atmosphere with plenty of people to talk to. The boss fights, while mostly easy (although they do get extremely hard near the end), are actually FUN to play and are not as frustrating as the ones in the first game (Hydra and Axel are good examples). The whole atmosphere is very enjoyable.
The game also allowes you to visit various worlds from Disney and fight along with some characters from their movies, such as Aladdin, Mulan, Beauty and the Beast, Tron and Pirates of the Carribean.
Ignore the whole Disney theme, even if you enjoy more mature games, you'll be sure to have a blast playing this. Excpect to put around 30 hours into it. 9.8/10
