when i saw this months ago i couldnt wait. i thought, finally on dvd, the kinks story will be told by the band. it is sort of. it would have been better if sound quality was better. come to think of it, the picture quality was very poor as well. most of the music videos were from the One for the Road dvd which you can get here in 5.1. the price was too high as well. it should be a bargain bin dvd. so dont waste your money. im hoping a better quality dvd will be released someday.

"You Really Got Screwed" is what your inner voice will tell you about 30 seconds into this dreadful mess. OK, I lied. It doesn't even take 30 seconds. It starts with a quote from "Celluloid Heroes" that reads, "Everybody is a dreamer and everybody is a star" so you know immediately that the producers were not aware that an apostrophe can be used to indicated the omission of one or more letters. The horrendous audio begins with loud screams and applause just dumped onto the track...no fade up...no music. That's just one example. The entire project looks like it was edited with a reciprocating saw and you can tell the editor has a great grasp of the subject matter when "Til the End of the Day" is credited to the album "Kintroversy" (sic) And this is the first five minutes. I couldn't watch much more.The narration is intrusive. The content and delivery are equally insulting. I want my money back...now!
This thing is so awful it makes those cheesy E! Hollywood stories look like Edward R Murrow's "Harvest of Shame." Come to think of it, Harvest of Shame would be a great title if one were to produce a documentary about the parents of the producers of this train wreck. If I could ask one question of those responsible for "You Really Got Me" it would be: What did the Kinks ever do to you?
Now, if you're a Kinks fan with some inexplicable need to feel simultaneously sad and angry for 87 minutes, this doc should fill the bill nicely. It's just beyond comprehension that a band as vital as the Beatles or the Stones should suffer this treatment. "You Really Got Me" is so hapless, it makes you want to ignore the Kinks. And they've been ignored long enough.

Will the people who make these things ever learn how to do it properly? Although there are few complete performances here, the DVD is marred by the frequent and all too predictible overtalk by the punter who narrates the DVD, riuning the said performances. In addition to the annoyance of such narration, the people who do it usually don't know as much about the band in question as those viewing the DVD. Bottom line. Pass on this. If you want high quality Kinks performances, I'm certain you will be able to find plenty of "alternative" DVDs out there.Don't buy this garbage or anything like it. Send a message to video producers: "IT IS NOT ABOUT THEM OR THE NARRATOR, IT IS ABOUT THE MUSIC, STUPID!!"
