If you like dry British wit this is the movie for you. Chiwetal Ejofor plays a drag queen (and as the credits at the end reveal) also sings four of the excellent musical pieces freatured in this film. Chiwetal Ejofor gives a whole new meaning to Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots Were Meant for Walking".As well as being outrageously funny, e.g., the little old grey-haired landlady in the rooming house where the drag queen is staying while she designs the boots for the bankrupt factory owner played by Joel Edgerton, asks "Are you a man"? Tentatively the Drag Queen answers, "Yes, love, I am. The landlady replys quite casually, "I just wondered whether I should leave the toilet seat up or down? Would you like a biscuit"? I just about lost it at that point and missed moments of the movie i was laughing so hard. There are also poignant moments in the film when we see the drag queen rejected by her father because she's not his idea of a man. While remaining outrageously funny, this movie also calls into question British (Canadian and American) ideas about what it means to be a man in our society. The female lead challenges the factory owner to "be a man" in a very different way than the drag queen who is rejected by the testosterone splashing factory workers. Only the drag queen and the factory owner know he used to be a heavy weight boxer before he came out. All in all this movie has something for everyone. Comedy. Human interest. Social Commentary and just plain fun. I recommend it highly.

I rented this movie on a hunch. I should have bought it (I have since). Aside from showing how kinky boots are made, this movie is packed with funny lines and witty dialogues, and the acting is great all the way through (no "fillers" here). Aside from the main characters - every one is spot on -, the supporting cast is top-notch, including actual factory workers who doubled as extras (brilliant). In the end, you'll rethink your views on drags, you will probably have an urge to buy high heel boots (with or without the whip!), and you will definitely have a few songs stuck in your head (not to worry: the soundtrack is available).

i love this movie. its about a guy who owns a shoe factory, but the shoe factory is about to go under, so he strikes a bargain with this cross-dresser names lola to make high heeled boots for men. lola's such a flamboyant character and stands up to all of the crap people give her and keeps on going. she has such a strength of character that i guess i want to see from someone facing such adversity. gender identity is such a delicate issue and i'm glad that there are such main stream movies as this that address the issue. its a really touching movie and its both feel good and sad... if that makes sense, but i enjoy watching it every time its on.
