Metal detectors, pottery wheels, itching powder, and magic carpets all have a go in Kipper Playtime. Joined by his usual band of tail-wagging buddies, Kipper the dog chats and chuckles his way through seven amusing cartoons, each about 8 minutes long. Whether searching the playground for buried treasure, entertaining little Arnold at home, or discovering that Pig has mistaken wet clay pots for fresh-baked cookies, Kipper always displays patience, kindness, and charm along with a keen wit. His innocent ways and lilting British accent suggest a strong Winnie the Pooh influence; but a playful streak shines through Kipper's polite, quiet demeanor. This pup is no pushover, as jokester Jake discovers when Kipper orchestrates a rather wet act of revenge in "Jake's Joke Box"--albeit a subtle, well-mannered revenge. Nothing offensive, loud, or sarcastic muddies this collection of puppy tales, earning it a two-paws-up rating for preschoolers and their parents. --Liane Thomas

5.0 out of 5 stars Charming and funny! July 8 2004
Format:VHS Tape
My 2-1/2 year old daughter LOVES this video. The characters are sweet, funny and likable. The stories are simple but told in a charming way that isn't patronizing. The video does not have any violence or high action, and the humor is gentle and not demeaning, so it is more suited to younger children. Kindness and friendship among the characters is stressed. I've seen it multiple times with my child, and I enjoy its sweet humor, visual style and music (kind of jazzy). A word of caution: Multiple viewings may cause your child to pick up a British accent!

My son received this video for his second birthday and it's the only thing he'll watch! He could care less about anything on TV except this video. I'm a little sick of it, but I guess that's OK since he loves it so much. My 6-month old thinks it's pretty neat too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant ! Aug 7 2003

After watching and reviewing Kipper: Pools, Parks and Picnics, I knew that I had to get the rest of the series.
The series, as Kipper himself would say, is "brilliant!"

This DVD has seven stories, at a bargain price. My son's favorites are "Looking After Arnold", where Kipper tries to entertain little Arnold by making the dining table into a playhouse (among other things), and "Kipper the Hero", where Kipper becomes Superdog, and saves the day for one of his friends. He also likes "The Magic Carpet", because it flies to the moon.

Having watched it myself a couple of times, I noticed a few things:

Kipper's eyebrows change position, and he often has only one, which changes sides randomly. Some of the other characters are drawn the same way.

Tiger seems to be the "rich kid" with toys like a metal detector, a potter's wheel and a joke box. In other videos, he has a fancy jacket and a sailboat.

I found it strange that Kipper, Tiger, Pig, Arnold and Jake (dogs and pigs) speak and behave like children, but in "Kipper the Hero", Jake has a kitten which is just a pet with no speech ability.

Anyway, those are just some observations, and the whole viewing experience is well worth the price.

Highly recommended for family viewing with young children.
