Product Description

Album Description

Kiran Ahluwalia is a performer of vocal music. More precisely she is a performer of two distinct styles of vocal music from the Indian subcontinent, now India and Pakistan. Kiran sings ghazals and Punjabi folk songs. The word ghazal is an Arabic word that means "to talk to women". Given that men have traditionally spoken to women a great deal about love; the name attached itself to a form of poetic sung verse that originated in Persia about 1000 years ago and reached India around 400 years later. This happened about 600 years before Kiran Ahluwalia was born but was to have a profound effect on her life.

Fans of Ahluwalia will find favourites like “Koka”, “Vo Kuch” and “Yeh Nahin” on this new release. But they’ll also be intrigued and delighted by the two new tracks featuring MacMaster. With the release of this impressive body of work in countries around the world, Kiran Ahluwalia is truly taking her music beyond boundaries and becoming a global musician for the 21st century.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb New Artist!, Jun 5 2005
By
This review is from: Kiran Ahluwalia (Audio CD)
Kiran Ahluwalia has put together an enchanting compilation of pieces which make traditional music of the Indian subcontinent accessible to the modern Western audience. The addition of Rez Abassi's guitar adds richness and texture to Kiran's already beautiful music.

I love this cd. Kiran sings like a free bird ... effortlessly communicating the universal message of mankind - LOVE.

Her songs have a natural flow and ease about them that does not resort to belching out impressive notes like many other pop stars.

If you're ready her music will set you free.

People familiar with the poetry of Rumi, Rabia, Hafiz, Kabir and Tukaran will find this collection of ghazals very rewarding.

For me this is a rare gem.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful CD, July 14 2010

I bought this impulsively at London Drugs about 5 years ago and have listened to it over and over, and even after this many years I still get the high, floaty feeling from it that I did the first time I heard it. There is not one song on the album I don't like. I'd never listened to this style of music before Kiran's CD and I must admit, I'm head over heels for it! Her voice is the sweetest you can imagine; there are times when she vocalizes when I'm not sure if it's her or an instrument!
Kiran Ahluwalia is incredibly talented and I can't recommend this album enough!
