KitchenAid Classic Series 4.5-Quart Tilt-Head Stand Mixer

A KitchenAid stand mixer does a lot more than bring ingredients together--it brings people together. Like when you make chocolate chip cookies and discover that they're more fun to make with a friend.

Bring home a KitchenAid stand mixer and whip up a quiche, or make the day with a chocolate mousse. Go healthy when you cook from scratch and add ingredients you trust. (And don't forget that even making meat loaf, mashed potatoes, and gravy is easier with a KitchenAid stand mixer--comfort food is allowed.)

There's just no substitute for the meals you make or the time you share. And there is just no substitute for the KitchenAid stand mixer.

Time-Honoured Design and Performance for Your Kitchen

A classic kitchen companion, this user-friendly stand mixer features a powerful 250-watt motor that can handle a wide variety of culinary mixing tasks. The countertop appliance comes equipped with a generous 4-1/2-quart stainless-steel bowl. Choose from 10 speed settings, from a very slow stir to a super-fast whip, by simply sliding the lever. Easy access to the beaters and bowl highlight a tilt-head stand mixer. Tilt the head back for access, tilt down and lock for mixing. Three accessories come included.

KitchenAid K4SSOB/WH

Use the flat beater for normal to heavy mixtures like cakes, creamed frostings, cookies, biscuits, and mashed potatoes.

KitchenAid K4SSOB/WH

The wire whip works well for mixtures that need air incorporated like eggs, heavy cream, sponge cakes, angel food cakes, and mayonnaise.

KitchenAid K4SSOB/WH

Put the dough hook to work when mixing and kneading yeast doughs for breads, rolls, coffee cakes, and buns.

59-Point Planetary Mixing Action: 59-point planetary mixing action means 59 touchpoints per rotation around the bowl for thorough ingredient incorporation. The beater, dough hook, or wire whip rotates around the bowl, giving incredible bowl coverage for comprehensive mixing.

Direct Drive Transmission: KitchenAid tilt-head stand mixers have a direct-drive transmission for reliable delivery of power.

The Flour Power Index: 8-cup flour power.

Metal Construction: Assures long-lasting, stable operation.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's a good mixer Dec 20 2010
Color Name:White
I like this mixer, but I would have preferred the larger 5 quart version with the bigger bowl. I also often use this mixer for kneading dough, and it has never smoked, but the lowest settings are all that are needed for decent kneading. However, I have had the trouble with the bowl tightening into the base grooves, and I've even had to call on the aid of a strong man to help get it unstuck. I just recently got the shredder attachment to this mixer, which I also love. I buy the huge blocks of cheese and shred them myself with this, and I like to use it for carrots and potatoes, as well. Kitchenaid makes great attachments for their mixers. I've had this mixer for 8 years, and everything is still in excellent working order - a real quality, sturdy piece of equipment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hasn't failed me. Oct. 30 2012
Color Name:Onyx Black
This is a great machine and spending $200.00 on it was a bargain. Some people complain about the bowl sticking. The user manual states to gently turn the bowl to lock it, not forcibly but gently.
There's absolutely no need to twist the bowl into the locking mechanism too tight. I do it very gently and it stays in place even when kneading bread or cinnamon rolls dough and once done I twist it in the other direction and comes off without any problems.
The overheating some are reporting when kneading doughs is that the machine must not exceed speed 2 when working on bread dough. If you do it at higher speed the motor isn't powerful enough and can't keep up specially when there's a lot of dough. For that kind of jobs you may want to look into the professional grade machines like the kitchenaid pro 600. I knead bread dough on level 2 and just let it run for a good 5-7 minutes and the dough comes out soft and velvety. The trick is to let it run on a lower speed even if it has to take longer.
Lighter tasks such as cake mix, whipped creams and even cookie dough I have no problem running on higher speed up to 10.

One other thing to mention is the first time I used this machine I found the head was wobbly. An issue experienced by some customers from the reviews I read. I had my husband tighten the 3 screws under the motor head like another customer suggested and the wobbling stopped. I think Kitchenaid needs to improve on their quality control in my opinion. Other than that, this machine was a great buy. It handled all I've thrown its way for my 10 year old daughter's birthday (we've baked from cakes and cookies to chocolate eclairs and key lime pie (recipe for key lime in in the kitchenaid recipe book).
Hope this helps !

4.0 out of 5 stars Great, bare bones entry model July 18 2014

Good purchase.

I had purchased the white model over at Overstock.com before, but the product arrived damaged and used.
I was pleasantly surprised when I decided to check Amazon and buy myself a Christmas present in December. At $189.99 I knew the price couldn't be beat even after doing my research and shopping around with various price match guarantees at the big-box stores.
It's been eight months already, and the mixer still works great! In fact, I just bought the ice-cream maker attachment today and will begin to experiment with my collection of gourmet ice creams.

The only complaint I have with the model I received, is that the bowl smelled of vanilla cookies and there were traces of cookie dough stuck to the top of the tilt-head from out of the package. (maybe I got someone's returned product?) Also the wire whisk isn't aligned and it had silvery powder rubbing off of the wires.

I opted for the black model, as it is way easier to keep clean with just a simple wipe-down. Stains don't show up as easily.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not as pictured Oct. 4 2011
By Mac
Color Name:Onyx Black
This product does not come as pictured. There is no bowl handle or black 'arms'... This picture is apparently the 'professional' model not the 'classic' which is the one described and sold. Was a little disapppointing since I really wanted one with a bowl handel but other than that I absoluately love my mixer, just wish it had come with the bowl pictured.

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVE IT!!! Feb. 15 2012
Color Name:White
I got this mixer for Christmas this year and to date I absolutely love this machine the best thing I have ever used. I can't believe I waited so long to finally get one, I have mixed everything from simple cake and cookie doughs to bread dough and I've never had a problem it handles everything wonderfully. It is so quiet and very powerful for a little machine. Can't wait to get all the attachments, I have the shredder attachment and the grinder and sausage stuffer. Haven't used the meat grinder and sausage stuffer yet. Wish however that I had of got the larger mixer to hold more but I am extremely pleased none the less. The bowl does stick a little bit but not too bad, the more you tighten it before you start mixing the harder it is to get out after your done. All around great machine.

5.0 out of 5 stars amazing mixer! Jan. 24 2014

I'm a newcomer to Canada, and this is my first KitchenAid stand mixer. I heard about it a lot, sounds like it's a necessity here. I've used it several times, and it works perfectly. Some review said the Classic 4.5-Q is not powerful enough, but I think it's good enough for me so far.
