I just got off the phone with Kitchenaid. I have had this coffeemaker for 2 months and it has a very strange problem - the carafe will not come clean. I have had many coffee makers and all the carafe ever required was normal cleaning with a papertowel and dish soap and voila - clean carafe, but not this one. With intense scrubbing, with a sponge scrubber, I can get a teeny bit of the coffee residue off the carafe, that's it (have also tried soaking with vinegar). In no way should cleaning a carafe be such a tough job. The worst part is just above where the waterline would be if you had made 8 cups of coffee, which we never do, we always make a full pot.
I just got off the phone with kitchenaid, the representative was very surly and told me that someone "might" call me back. I told him that really wasn't good enough and I expected them to do something about it. He put me on hold and when he came back it was like talking to a different person, he couldn't have been more helpful or more polite.
They are sending me a replacement carafe and hopefully it will be normal.
Update: They did send the replacement carafe within a couple of weeks. It is normal, normal washing keeps it clean, so the carafe was faulty. I still like this coffee maker, we no longer use the charcoal filter it comes with and it will work without it, just an fyi. My only disappointment and this is personal preference, is that I don't like stainless steel on appliances, it is hard to keep fingerprints off it.
