Surprised but happy,
By
This review is from: Knitted Bears: All Dressed Up! (Paperback)
This book was not quite what I was expecting, but I am happy with it nonetheless. First it is small, which makes it easy to carry with you, if you are knitting on the go. But at the same time, the binding is tight, so it will not lay flat, and I thik with repeated flipping the pages might come loose. I decided to photocopy the patterns I wanted to carry around rather than risking damage to the book. The patterns are all pretty straightforwad. The bears themselves are done in plain old garter stitch, but the big plus are the accessories. There are patterns for all the basics, and the book really helps to feed your imagination, so that already I am thinking up new ways to dress the bears. Undressed, the bears are not that special to look at, but dressed they are *so* cute, and this is just what I was looking for - bears that express a moment or a look, rather than teddies for kids to play with. This is an important thing to remember, cause kids' toys have to be kid-proof, whereas deco/adult stuff doesn't have to be. For example, if real button eyes are used, and you give that teddy to a kid with teeth coming in, you just might have a choking hazard. The author does make the distinction, and she recommends using embroidery for eyes, nose, etc, if the bears are to be given to kids, but the cutest bears have accessories that are not kid-proof - which is why I think they would be better as decorations or as gifts to adults, expressing uniqueness. For example, one bear is a cute little guy who's a soccer player. The basic pattern can be modified so that country colours can be incorporated, so I've got one in the works now that I'm going to give to my (older) son who loves Brazil's team. He's too old to "play" with the bear, but he will love the fact that it's got his team's colours. This is where this book really shines in my opinion, helping you to create personalized gifts.

Great gift ideas, but her math and gauge are off.,

First, let me say that the bears are adorable and the costumes are fantastic. These have become my favorite knitted gift. They are very fun and quick to knit up. Overall, this is is a great value for the money. HOWEVER...1.) They must teach some kind of strange math over in the UK. The instructions for the decrease rows don't make any sense. The stitch counts don't add up (how can you K3, K2 together K3 3x and end up with 7 stitches when you start out with 12 stitches? This happens a lot. You just have to figure out what you are trying to accomplish and make it work. 2.) The costumes are too big for the bears if you use the same size yarn and needle for both. I've had to switch to a smaller needle size to get a smaller gauge for the costume and over-stuff the bear a bit. 3.) the faces don't quite turn out the way hers do...the noses don't protrude unless you put something stiff inside, like a bit of paper or styrofoam. My bears turn out more ugly than cute, but I love them just the same.
