Product Description

Review

Praise for Ann Budd's previous title, "Sock Knitting Master Class" ..".the patterns! Beautiful, yet functional stitch designs and fun colors. This is a complete book." - "CraftGossip.com" "Some features I particularly like in the book: each pattern has a box listing the different techniques used in the pattern; An overview of different styles of creating parts of the sock, such as a few different heel types, toes, and cuff treatments; both top-down and toe-up construction techniques; a handy DVD in the back. If you are looking for some great new sock patterns or just looking to get started knitting socks, this book is sure to have what you need." - "A Woolie Tale yarn shop" "You think you already know everything there is to know about socks? After all, there are a multitude of sock books on the market these days, perfectly good books. You know everything. Except...do you really? Most (though not all) sock books I own are either filled with patterns with not a whole lot of time spent on technique, or they're full of guidance but with blah patterns. Of course, some do hit the balance between pattern and technique. Some are fairly exhaustive, in fact, and you may already have them on your shelves. But...they're not THIS book. First, this book is by Ann Budd, a genius in our time..."Master Class" is the right name!" - "KnittingScholar.com" "It's not often that I scoop a book from the top of the review pile and take it home with me, and it's even less common for me to sit down and read it right away. But with sock knitting on my mind, I was intrigued, so last night I sat down to peruse this over a cup of tea. I was absolutely delighted to see that the first chapter of the book is devoted to explaining the whys and wherefores of sock construction. Top-down or toe-up? She's got it covered. Heel flap, short row or afterthought heel? Ditto. Want to choose from a pointed toe, a spiral or star toe, or a toe band? She's got your back with that, too.

This is more of a puzzle book than the pattern book I was hoping for. The book is broken down into the elements of the sweater, and then as the knitter, you have to piece the different elements together by flipping through the book. Great if you are comfortable and know more than the basics. Also great if you're comfortable with mathematics and the technical side of knitting. Not so great if you just want to pick a pattern and knit. I have owned this book for months now, and have yet to work a single stitch. Guess which category I belong to. :-)

Ann Budd has done it again! Easy to follow instructions for multiple yarn gauges and sizes along with ideas on how to personalize the hems and necklines with no seams to sew. If this had been the first sweater book I picked up I'd have knit sweaters and cardigans long ago. This book is wire bound as well as having a hard cover allows it to lay flat making it easier to read from or photocopying the needed pages for marking your chosen pattern. I highly recommend this book for any new knitters that want to try making sweaters as well as all those other knitters who hate the thought of sewing seams after the sweater is complete. This book also pairs wonderfully with Ann Budd's The Knitter's Handy Book of Patterns which cover s mitts, hats, scarves, socks, and pieced sweaters.

This book is highly detailed, with lots of helpful information for people just getting into sweater knitting. All the patterns are designed with charts that can be used to modify them for children or adults. Very nice set of projects - nothing overly fancy or modern - just simple loose top down sweaters.

This is book is a great guide for people looking for starter projects to learn knitting, but there isn't much there for advanced knitters. If you are looking for something exciting or trendy I would not recommend this book, most of the projects are very dull, but still great if you just want a cozy sweater.

I'm new to knitting sweaters, and it took me a bit, but the illustrations really helped and the patterns are easy to follow once you get the hang of it.

I like how you can 'see' how its coming together as you knit. Rather than pieces that have to be put together.

Should have stuck with my "Knitting from the Top" book. The sweaters are unimaginative in the extreme and in limited sizes.
