Product Description

From Library Journal

With a knitting renaissance well underway in the United States, many books targeted to beginners are hitting the market. Although Falick (Knitting in America), editor of Interweave Knits magazine, and prolific knitwear designer Nicholas (Knitting Today's Classics) here offer a pattern book of 25 knitwear designs for infants to two year olds, theirs is also one of the best books a public librarian could recommend for the novice knitter. It covers in detail every aspect of knitting that could possibly interest a new knitter: casting on, knitting, purling, shaping, color knitting, circular knitting, cables, binding off, and finishing. The projects, which include colorful stitch-sampler baby blocks and felted balls, as well as larger projects like sweaters, blankets, and a felted diaper bag, are presented roughly in order of difficulty. Instructions are complete, illustrations abound, and each project is illustrated in full-color photos by well-known baby photographer Ross Whitaker. For all knitting collections.

Book Description

Knitting for Baby provides knitters of all levels with everything they need to create handmade expressions of love for those special babies in their lives. Master hand-knitting designer Kristin Nicholas and bestselling author Melanie Falick offer 30 fresh, irresistible designs sized for infants to two-year-olds, step-by-step instructions and illustrations, and a comprehensive how-to-knit section for those new to the craft. From booties and blankets to toys and sweaters, the exquisite projects showcase contemporary colors and luscious natural fibers that are as soft as a baby’s skin.

Each of the patterns is clearly written and thoroughly tested and is accompanied by beautiful, hand-painted illustrations of the skills required, from casting on the first stitch to colorwork, cables, and finishing details. Engaging color photographs by acclaimed baby photographer Ross Whitaker show the finished garments and accessories being worn and enjoyed by a charming cast of babies being their naturally delightful selves.

Originally published in 2002, Knitting for Baby has sold more than 40,000 copies in hardcover. The new paperback reissue of this timeless book is sure to find an even broader audience of knitters, both novice and expert.

4.0 out of 5 stars Clearly written, targeted towards advanced beginners..., Aug 4 2003

(REAL NAME)
As a beginner knitter, I was excited to see that this book also functions as a mini-reference guide to some of the basic knitting stitches. However, after I started my first project, I had to refer back to "Knitting for Dummies", which has clearer instructions in knitting techniques. So, if this is your first venture into knitting, I would recommend that you puchase this book in conjunction with another, in-depth reference guide.

Having said that, I give a hearty "thumbs-up" to the clarity of the instructions for a given project. I am working on a pair of booties, and have been able to follow the instructions well enough to learn techniques for yarnovers (a method for making eyelets) as well as i-cords.

My only other disappointment was with the breadth and practicality of some of the projects. There are a number of patterns for sweaters (a little too challenging for this beginner!) and toys, but I was looking for some good "heirloom" projects for a newborn niece - I had to settle for the baby booties and hat, for which there are only two or three patterns in the book.

Overall, a good choice!

5.0 out of 5 stars Now this is a beginner book!, Jun 9 2004
Teaching from scratch and moving on one project at a time! Instead of making useless squares, they become wearable garments and blankets instantly. It's a good idea like someone else said to use cheap practice yarn in case you do make a mistake. But don't get discouraged, this is the BEST beginner book hands down. Work through as slowly as you need to, but stick with it, you'll be expert in no time!

5.0 out of 5 stars great book for making gifts for loved ones, May 24 2004
By A Customer
I like this book because it expands on the usual baby designs, and includes patterns for balls and blocks and other items that you don't usually find in baby pattern books. While some have complained that the patterns are too simplistic to be considered 'heirlooms', I think that in today's hectic world, anything you take the time and love to knit is something very special. Would you rather give someone you love something you knit with care or something you bought half an hour before the baby shower?
That said, the patterns are very appealing and useful, and are beginners will love the information and 'how-to' sections in the book. I have progressed far beyond the beginner's stage of knitting, but this was one of the first books i bought and i still love it.
