Wonderful Book of Designs for Edge Knitting,
By
This review is from: Knitting Over The Edge: Unique Ribs Cords Appliques Color Eclectic - The Second Essential Collection of Decorative Borders (Hardcover)
Nicky Epstein does not disappoint with her Knitting Over the Edge book. If you've seen the pink shawl on the cover and are intrigued, you should see the whole shawl. There's a beautiful photo of the shawl in the book along with the pattern. The shawl is absolutely lovely, done in a soft pink wool in basketweave stitch with crocheted roses lining the edge. There are four other designs with patterns offered in the book - a red sweater with a flower, a nouveau style long coat done with a pom pom fringe, a purple shawl with a floral edge and a light purple scarf with a really interesting donut-like fringe, which looks really neat. And all this isn't even the main theme of the book! For interesting stitches, there are about 183 pages of stitch designs offered from Ribs, (think loop de loop, pom pom, fringe, etc.) Cords (loop de loop, herringbone, chain link knots, etc). There is a section on Appliques like the roses mentioned above, leaves, other types of flowers, discs, donuts. The Colour section takes the stitches and mixes them up with two or more colours of yarn used to create patterns--this is beyond your basic fairisle stitch, and covers stiches such as "Sugar Twists" and Knotty Stripes". Some of the colour stitches use graphs to plot out where each colour is used. The last section called Nouveau covers the really cool and trendy stuff. Here are directions to twisted loops and cable knots, open work, layered flaps, holsters, ruffles, etc. At the back of the book is a term and stitch abbreviation and it does give an explanation of how to do the stitch. There's also a few examples of stitches with colour drawings (Kitchener, Duplication and Embroidery Stitches). This book is well worth the investment as a reference source for hundreds of stitches to apply to the edges of your knitted garments. Happy Knitting Everyone!

A unique and worthwhile collection,

Anyone hesitating if Nicky Epstein's second book on knitting borders is worthwhile - worry no more. As her personal intro says, "...completely new...", it is a wonderfully fresh, new addition to her first collection. And, there are many of these new edgings - this is not a skinny, part 2 type of follow up book. The format of the book is the same - clear concise swatch photos, wonderful use of yarns to highlight stitches, and a larger section on color knitting. You will be able to customize your knitting w. ease since the edging patterns details are clear and concise. The author gives a wonderful intro on texture and size as a jump start point for you. The edgings are organized in logical style categories w. a fresh idea of one, "Noveau" added - it stays true to its title. As in the first book, patterns highlighting her new edgings are included. The patterns are like palettes for her fantastc new collection of edgings. This one is a keeper, for sure! 62 of 62 people found the following review helpful

A must-have resource for ALL knitters!,

I would give this book 10 stars if I could, it's just that great! The popular author of Knitting on the Edge now offers a new book for knitters: Knitting over the Edge. The subject of both books is, predictably, creative edges for knitwear. In this valuable reference, you'll find more than 350 decorative borders for knitted garments of all types. The lush American Beauty Capelet featured on the cover is just a hint of the treasures you'll find within. Honestly, you could spend a lifetime exploring the exotic ribs, cords, appliqués, and patterns offered by this extraordinarily creative and talented knitter and author. Beautiful as this book is, however, you'll also find lots of meat inside: plenty of diagrams, concise instructions, close-up photos of knitted edges, and gorgeous, irresistible designs. Highly recommended for knitters of all skill levels. -Sharilyn Miller, author of Bead on a Wire 48 of 48 people found the following review helpful

I have three books by Nicky Epstein. All have errors in them, but are easily corrected by a search. I went to Vogue Knitting and found corrections for her "Edge" books, and for Knitted embelishments, I went to Interweave press. All the books are great, despite the flaws. They give me tons of ideas to add to my designs. I wouldn't hesitate to buy any of the books.
