Transferring pictures from your PC to your M820 is quick and easy. In addition to organizing and editing your pictures, this software makes it simple to move your favorite pictures and slide shows from a computer directly onto the frame.

The Kodak EasyShare M820 displays images in HD format (16:9 aspect ratio). The screens are color tuned to Kodak's standards and use Kodak Color Science for vibrant colors and pleasing skin tones-displaying pictures in brilliant color and crisp detail.

To customize the frame to match your home's decor, two decorative mattes are included, in Cranberry Red and Silver colors. In addition, optional Kodak Digital Frame Faceplates are available in Mahogany with a gold matte, Silver with a blue matte, Black Shadowbox with a champagne matte, and Espresso Shadowbox with a black matte. I bought this new the other day over the others as the picture quality was pretty good. It has an easel stand on the back, but will also free-stand upright by itself on its own frame if you need to place it at a higher location.

The manual is minimal, and if you already have photo editing software, you don't need to install the Kodak software on your computer; just save your images to a USB memory stick in Windows and you're on your way.

I went through about 400+ images of mine that I wanted to display, and as they were about 5 Mb each, I re-sized all of them down to the correct size of 800 pixels wide. To get them even smaller, select a quality level of 5 (medium) in Photoshop at the end of your "Save As" command. Your image should now be about 50-120 bytes. If you want to get real fancy, crop your images first using a cropping proportion of 3x5; the image will then perfectly match the M820's screen size of 800x480, and your images will display exactly as YOU cropped them, not as the unit crops images which are of a different format. (If you want to take pictures that will match this screen proportion, set your camera to 16:9 format).

Enter problems: This unit is touted as being able to hold 128 Mb / 1000 images on its internal memory. My 400 re-sized images totaled only 42 Mb, but the unit will not download all my images, rather it gives a "Create File Failed" error message after 181 images and just stops downloading. I tried to place my images into 3 separate folders (batches) on the memory stick, but this did not help. I even tried using the memory card in my camera to download; same problem. Also tried directly connecting the M820 to my PC and Copy & Paste them to the unit in Windows. Nope! Same problem.

I took the unit back for an exchange, and the new one does the exact same thing! So, Kodak is either being economical with the truth about the capacity of the internal memory, or I have stumbled across two faulty units in a row.

It will play all of the images from the USB memory stick, but that takes the stick out of service and I'll have to buy another one.

I'd sure like to find the solution to this problem.

Further to my initial review:

Well, I finally got through to tech suppoort and solved the problem. One needs to connect the unit to a computer and then create a separate Folder on the M820 and then dump all images to that. Apparently the M820's internal memory is set as FAT, which has limitations, and the new Folder is automatically a FAT32, which has no problem dealing with the larger number of files.

Resolution and picture quality are good. It was a gift for my husband and I didn't hear him cursing when putting pictures on it, so it must have been fairly straightforward. Things that should be adjustable, like the delay between picture change, are adjustable. The only thing I could ask for would be the ability to have 2 separate slide-shows that could be toggled between so that we could have one with portrait pictures, and one with landscape.

First review by "Star Stuff" mentions an issue with number of pictures than can be added on the top level directory, which is where the frame will put files when you ask the frame to "copy" to internal memory. I do not own an M820 frame, but my W1020 was displaying the same issue. As "Star Stuff" said, the internal memory is formatted as a FAT file system. What I did is connect the frame to my computer, and reformat the internal memory as a FAT32 file system. Now I can put all my pictures in the top-level directory.

As a side note, I really like the Kodak frames (own a M1020 and W1020), especially the display quality and anti-glare screen. I just would have preferred a 3:4 aspect ratio instead of a 3:5 ratio. I end up doing to much cropping myself (frame will crop by itself, but will always crop the lower part of the picture - which is not always what I want.
