Product Description

From Amazon.co.uk

A musical chameleon, pianist Keith Jarrett was at his finest when he recorded these sustained solo improvisations in a German concert hall in 1975, the first lasting 26 minutes, the second 40. Melodies and rhythmic figures arise fluidly from his fingers as he moves from one idea to another, while his strong left hand is often used for repeated motifs that generate a rolling hypnotic power. This couples with strongly consonant harmonies to impart the flavour of gospel music at times, dance music and Debussy at others. Above all, it's Jarrett's ability to knit all of his moods and wanderings into an almost seamless tapestry of warm and tuneful ideas that gives this music its enduring appeal. --Stuart Broomer

5.0 out of 5 stars some of Jarrett's most sweepingly majestic moments, May 5 2004

This is the first Keith Jarrett album I've heard. I am aware that Jarrett himself said: "I think of that album as being full of really rich ideas but describing not as much of the process as I'm interested in describing...very much less describing the process than the other live solo recordings."
Contrasting Koln to his other concerts (I own also Vienna, Paris, Bremen/Lausanne, Tokyo '84, Dark Intervals), I'm not sure what he means.

For one thing its the most "straightforward" sounding one, I suppose, which explains its accessibility and popularity.

But does that matter? How does that make it less good than the others?

Personally I think the Koln concert contains some of Jarrett's most hauntingly gorgeous moments. Part IIB has an almost minimalist (although much more interesting) passage which erupts into a very Romantic piano like passage. This is the most touching and deeply moving piano solo I have yet heard.

Whether or not Jarrett wants to get all intellectual on us and imply that its easily accessible to the public is immaterial as far as I'm concerned.

This is gorgeous music and you had better buy it.

This was the second cd of mr Keith Jarrett that I bought and is certainly the best way to be introduced to his world....great record and easy to listen to by anyone.
I recommended to everyone. Music that doesnt fit into any category.....just a masterpiece of solo piano and music in general.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't believe that Paris is rated higher than this one!, Oct 4 2000

This review is from: Koln Concert (Audio CD)
Koeln Concert is amazing. The music, as you know, is Keith Jarrett ad lib at his absolute best. The sound is so soulful, rhythmic and beautiful. It's evel amusing at times for his timely wailing that somehow got recorded. If you've ever seen Jarrett in concert, then you know these wails are so much a characteristic of his passion for his art. Alhtough these takes are not "jazz" as one might be used to hearing from Jarrett, that is they are not in the spirit of Bye Bye Blackbird or Deerhead Inn, they could be classified as a sort of Jazz-Classical. And finally, though Paris Concert is really neat, it is not astoundingly amazing like these pieces.
