Since Kempe's first commercial recording there have been several fine performances of the work . Previn's sadly is not one of them. His tempos are overly broad and he often makes Korngold's lush textures come off as thick in places. One need only listen to a few minutes of Kempe's recording to hear how those at times lush textures can be delivered quite clearly with no lack of passion. The London Symphony Orchestra is also not on its best behavior and there a few rough spots. They have performed the work several times over the years so unfanmiliarity is not the reason. Kempe still remains my favorite but how I wish that Mitropoulos had gotten a chance.
