Review

"It is clear, concise and informative—like the author himself—and it is beautifully laid out with bullet points and sub-heads for every aid, every movement, every eventuality."  —Sylvia Loch

"The best [book] to be written this century."  —British Horse

"Kottas-Heldenberg's years of training experience shine through in his book. It's organized extremely clearly, making it an excellent reference guide that you can refer back to without much page-flipping . . .Timeless dressage lessons for both horse and rider."  —Horsemen's Yankee Pedlar

"There are various reasons why I loved this book, but a main one is its extraordinary clarity, in part a result of that organization. . . . If for some reason I was forced to abandon my considerable dog-eared dressage library and was allowed to take with me only a single book, this one would be it." —Dressage Today (July 21, 2011)

Product Description

A distillation of the practice and philosophy of prominent international dressage trainers, this guide is instructive to those who aspire to classical horsemanship principles. A rider must first train themselves in correct posture and a thorough understanding of the aids before training the horse, according to the philosophy within this manual. Next, the volume highlights the value of establishing rapport with the horse, enhancing the animal’s mental responses, and developing its physique with groundwork before progressing to training under the saddle. Filled with detailed notes and remedies for common problems, the text focuses on thorough, incremental development of the basic gaits, explains the value and execution of the lateral exercises, and introduces advanced work including tempi changes, pirouettes, piaffe, and passage.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, helpful book!, Nov 15 2010
This review is from: Kottas on Dressage (Hardcover)
Kottas writes with simplicity and clarity. He discusses training concepts in a clear and easy to understand manner that is helpful for a rider starting out, or a more experienced rider. I have been riding dressage for a long time and I found that Kottas' explinations of movements and some training concepts to help add a fullness and an overall richness to my relationship with my horse and we have acheived more harmony and purity in our movements. Everyone should read this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book but not for beginner, Oct 25 2010

This review is from: Kottas on Dressage (Hardcover)
I really enjoy reading this book. It is apparent that Kottas loves horses and i truly respect his focus on groundwork and lunging. This is something which is frequently lost in riding lessons in the US. However, being somewhat a newer rider I didn't get quite as much out of his examples as a more knowledgeable rider would get.
Things for me need to be more broken down. But that is my insufficiency, not the books', as it is clearly geared towards the more advanced rider. I do like that it is broken down precisely into problems and their solving as well as what to do when the response is not the "expected" one. That way, one also learns the possible other "400" ways of how a horse can respond.
All in I would recommend this book, but as a beginner, get additional books (like enlightened equitation) to give you more detail.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pursuing Classical Dressage, April 15 2011
By Diana Duffy "Diana" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Kottas on Dressage (Hardcover)
To anyone familiar with or involved in the world of dressage, Arthur Kottas-Heldenberg needs no introduction. His years at the Spanish Riding School in Vienna exposed him to the best of classical dressage where the well-being of the horse is first and foremost. Steeped in traditions and methods hundreds of years old, and which methods have been proven sound, the Spanish Riding School continues to be a source of inspiration for many riders. For those of us who can't ride and learn there, people like Arthur Kottas, who leave the School to train on their own, are the next best thing for us.

The book follows a familiar format of training books, beginning with the rider and his/her position, ground work, then advancing on to increasingly difficult movements as the horse and/or rider progress. What I particularly like about this book is the fact that when things don't turn out perfectly, Mr. Kottas gives specific reasons why the exercise may have been unsuccessful or less than ideal. Usually the fault lies with the rider's preparation and use of aids, and he explains each scenario quite clearly.

The book is very well illustrated with excellent photographs taken by Ewald Willibald. As an equine photographer, I know how difficult catching the correct moment in a stride can be, so the quality here impresses me, too. The author's daughter rides beautifully, and shows the movements well. There are also numerous line drawings which illustrate various schooling movements.

One disclaimer should be made regarding ANY book on training - A book does not replace a good instructor. It cannot teach a beginner timing and feel. It can be a starting point in learning, or a reference for those who are more experienced in training horses, or simply a refresher course if one needs to go back a step or two in their program.

Classical dressage has the horse's welfare first and foremost, not to be confused with some of the shenanigans that go on in today's show rings. One must "see the horse as a partner. He must be trained slowly and patiently", to quote the author. Or, as another old maxim goes, "Things take time." Riding and training for the beauty it preserves and enhances in horse and rider is pure joy, and to that end, there's nothing like classical dressage.

This is definitely one book which will be added to my library.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kottas on Dressage - Classical riding, Dec 21 2010

This review is from: Kottas on Dressage (Hardcover)
This book describes classical training methods; including the rider's seat and it's importance, the development of the horse's gaits, training exercises and dressage movements. I was surprised that I didn't get more information that I didn't know, or read in the many other dressage books I have on riding. I was expecting a lot more "aha" moments. That being said, the book covers every aspect of dressage riding and training you would want to know about. The book is very easy to understand and includes common faults of all sorts that one tends to forget about and should review periodically. There is something in this book for everyone.

The horse and rider photos are beautiful to look at, but the horse was always in a full bridle except for work on the lunge line. As I believe a well trained dressage horse should be able to do all the movements on a snaffle, I think it would have been better if at least half the photos showed the horse in a snaffle bit. Also, the rider, Caroline, is not wearing a helmet. This is a very bad example for the equestrian community, and surprising, especially as such care is taken with the horse in placing and carefully using equipment. The book also contains many very well done drawings, showing exactly what the text is describing.

Mr. Kottas is clearly a master and I'm glad to have this book in my library. I's sure I will refer to it often.
