There's something inescapably appealing about this camp 1983 Star Wars-meets-The Lord of the Rings knockoff that encourages the viewer to overlook its many silly shortcomings and simply enjoy the fun. James Horner's rollicking music score certainly helps, as does the epic-scale CinemaScope photography of the breathtaking Italian landscapes. The costumes and extravagant production design are also great to look at, and much of Derek Meddings's visual effects work still looks striking. Freddie Jones stands head and shoulders above the rest of the cast as the wise Ynyr, while the two romantic leads, Ken Marshall as Prince Colwyn and Lysette Anthony (with an overdubbed American voice) as Princess Lyssa, are mere formalities on which to hang the plot. The all-British supporting cast includes Todd Carty, Bernard Bresslaw, Robbie Coltrane, Liam Neeson, and the gorgeous Francesca Annis. Krull is definitely one of the best Sci-Fi/Fantasy movies of the 1980's.
Krull takes you on a fun adventure into a place and time that is left to our own imaginations to figure out.
It is a uniuqe blend of Battle Star Galactica, Conan The Barbarian, Lord Of The Rings and Excalibur all mixed into one giant Pot of Fantasy Soup.
We have the Bad guy... a powerful alien Beast set on taking over planet Krull. We have his army who are known as "The Slayers" who terrorize the planet with Laser Guns and super natural powers, and We have the Prince and his fellowship of comrades who help him on his great quest to save the princess enslaved in the Black Fortress and destroy the EVIL alien beast who controlls it.
It is a story of Bravery, Fellowship, Love, and Honor. Sword against Laser, Good against evil.
Krull should be in the collection of any Sci-fi/fantasy movie lover as it is truly a "Classic"

A similar kind of fantasy adventure to films such as "Legend", "The Dark Crystal" and "The Princess Bride". A young king travels with a band of friends made up of a friendly Cyclops, an old wise man, a shape-shifting 'mountain man' (comic relief), a blind seer, a young boy and a band of thieves to rescue his beautiful bride from `the Beast' (the devil really.) This takes them on a mythical journey through a fantasy land to find a black fortress which changes its location with each sunset.
It was made in the 90s and has better FX than older fantasy films of this type. It was better than I was expecting and I'd highly recommend it for fans of fantasy. It doesn't take itself too seriously, in some ways being a light-hearted film. Yet it can be quite dark, not afraid to kill off likeable characters in horrible ways. I appreciate its imagination and the old-fashioned sense of honour and devotion to a higher cause. I wouldn't call it a classic film but it's certainly a worthy addition to anyone's fantasy film collection.

This movie has an interesting plot, good characters, a fun plot, and great adventure. For this movie to work you have to give into it, like any other fantasy world. Are there holes? Sure, just like any fantasy/sci-fi film ever made. If you give into the magic then its a wonderful tale.

Retro Fantasy Classic
This movie is one I grew up on in the 80's. I was pleased to find it on DVD, It is worth owning just for memories of retro special effects and just basic escapism.
