Dark as Brazil,

This review is from: L'Âge des ténèbres (DVD)
The knife of Denys Arcand's satire cuts deeper than ever in this film. It's remarkably like Terry Gilliam's Brazil in this respect (though not in production design): ineffectual civil servant who is a heroic lover in his dreams and fantasies finally makes a break with The System ... only in this case he also makes a break with his compensatory fantasies, and he isn't crushed by the system in the end. Arcand's depiction of contemporary life at large is almost as surrealistic as Gilliam's. If this film isn't quite as good as The Barbarian Invasions or Jesus of Montreal -- the two greatest Canadian films of all, in my opinion -- it's still very much worth seeing. Much of it is savagely funny. The only trouble is that the darkness is so deep here that the light at the end is almost overwhelmed by it.By the way, the English subtitling of the film is fine, but the extras on the DVD (a couple of deleted scenes, and interviews with Arcand) are not translated at all.

L'âge des ténèbres à son meilleur!,

This review is from: L'Âge des ténèbres (DVD)
