Simple set-up and use, but expensive and ideal for smaller spaces Dec 6 2013

Vine Customer Review of Free Product
Received for review by the Amazon Vine program, I was excited to try out the LG Electronics LAP340 Sound Plate with 4.1 Surround Sound with built-in subwoofer and Bluetooth pairing capabilities. I have no previous experience with sound bars or plates, but have tried out many AV receivers and speaker-subwoofer combinations for my home theater. I watch a lot of movies both streaming and on Blu-ray, and listen to Pandora and iTunes Radio.

To test drive this speaker system I hooked it up to two HDTVs in different home environments. First, to my daughter's VIZIO VA19LHDTV10T 19-Inch ECO 720p LCD HDTV (2010 Model). I decided to use her TV because her bedroom is only about 8' square and in such a small space, I assumed it would perform very well. Second, I hooked it up to my Samsung 42" plasma which is 6 years old, and in a room that is approximately 13' long by 10' wide; placed at one of the long ends of the room. Both TVs have optical ports (a requirement for using this sound plate as this is how it hooks up to your TV; cable is included).

NOTE: This product is recommended for HDTVs sizes 32"-55", although it will work with smaller TVs as long as there is an optical audio input on the TV.

In my daughter's small room this speaker system was amazing! Added depth and dimension to streamed programming (Netflix and HuluPlus), and music from an iPhone or iPod streamed via Bluetooth to the sound plate sounded great too. The Bluetooth connection was solid once connected, although the devices seemed to take a bit longer than expected to pair with the LG Sound Plate.

Regarding the Bluetooth pairing function, because there's no 'on screen' navigation; it's all done with lights (each light means something - in the directions that ship with the speaker system), you do need to turn off your TV to pair via Bluetooth - otherwise the device seems confused and will differ to the optical input as its first choice.

When I took the plate to the bigger room and swapped out my home theater Onkyo receiver, subwoofer and speakers (5.1 set-up) for it, I was less impressed, but still could see value in this sound system. Just not as much value as the retail price of this item.

The bigger room begged for more depth from the subwoofer, and the surround sound was only evident if you were right in front of the speaker with it at ear level. If it was lower and/or you were off to the right or the left of center - the sound experience was different - not as good. In the big room with several angles for seating, not as good as I would have hoped, but I could see if I had this under a TV in the bedroom where the speaker was at ear level across the room - it would be really nice.

NOTE: IF you have an LG HDTV with Sound Sync technology built-in, the SoundPlate wireless is supported. That's great news if your TV is mounted on the wall and you want to have the SoundPlate hidden below it!

For general TV and movie watching this speaker system is a very good choice, even with a cheap TV. (I'm sure there are other sound bars and plates which could do this too, but alas, I can't speak to the others - just this one.) The dual built-in subwoofers add good depth and overall the volume increase is a fantastic bonus. "Slim but Powerful" is on the box, and I'd agree with that statement!

The speaker is not super heavy, but well made. It can hold a TV up to 85 pounds on it, and comes with a 1 year warranty. The simple remote controls and easy set-up are a refreshing change from complicated AV receiver hook-ups, and I could see this being an outstanding choice for non-techy types of people or those who simply enjoy minimalist looks and still want great sound.

I would recommend this speaker system for those who want enhanced sound for their HDTV, and the ability to stream audio Bluetooth content from their iPod, phone or PC. Those with small spaces will be especially happy with this sound system.

I do not recommend it for bigger rooms with seating that's not directly in front of the speaker plate, or for those who want a fully immersive surround sound experience when watching movies. This sound system is good, but at this high price point the bar is set high for all scenarios and there's just not enough room for audio adjustments to make that happen.

A decent option for the less discriminating Jan. 16 2014

Originally, I wanted to replace my current average-priced surround sound speaker setup with a Soundbar, but decided to give the LG LAP340 a try when it was offered to me. This product is not a soundbar, but a 4.1 system that incorporates two subwoofers into the "plate." It is, as advertised, extremely compact. It fits right on the bottom of my TV shelf and my DVR sits on top of it. It has a very low profile and can barely be noticed from the room until it is turned on. Unfortunately, the smaller profile probably hurts it in the sound department, especially withe the bass. Although it sounded better than my TV's stock speakers, and handles treble fairly well, I didn't get the punch and lows I thought it might have when watching action movies. I of course didn't expect it to replace a standalone subwoofer, but with two built in subwoofers to handle bass, I thought it would be stronger than it was. I moved it to my guest bedroom, which is smaller, and it does a great job in there.

If you're looking for this Soundplate to replace a soundbar and subwoofer, or to be used as your main home entertainment unit, I might advise against the LG Soundplate and try a high quality soundbar and sub instead. But if you want it for a smaller room and you're not a big audiophile, the LAP340 works fairly well.

For The Price, It Should Be Better Than "Okay" Dec 6 2013

I can't highly recommend this LG Electronics LAP340 Sound Plate 340 Slim 4.1 Surround Sound Speaker System with Built-In Sub Woofer which is surprising because I've become an LG fan and my last four electronic purchases have been LG.

We already owned the less expensive LG Electronics NB3530A Sound Bar System, a wall model with wireless sub-woofer. We've been thrilled with it and love the great sound that is leaps and bounds better than the slightly older Panasonic sound bar it replaced.

We needed a 2nd speaker system for a 2nd television that sits on a stand, so I wasn't looking for another bar. I saw that this "base speaker" would fit directly under the tv on the stand, and it was LG, so it looked like the perfect solution.

At a cost of about 30% more than my other LG stero, I had high expectations. Boy, was I wrong. The sound just doesn't have the same clarity and range as my cheaper bar, plus the built in sub-woofers dominate the sound too much when cranked. They're too close to the other speakers. I now understand my the more common separate sub-woofer arrangement makes more sense.

If it was all about design, this LG Electronics LAP340 Sound Plate 340 Slim 4.1 Surround Sound Speaker System with Built-In Sub Woofer would warrant 5 stars. For the most part, the base piece isn't noticeable because it blends in so completely with the piano black tv and stand. If you were to notice it, you'd appreciate the sleek modern design.

Because sound is more important to me than design. I can barely give this 3 stars. Save yourself more than $100 and check out LG Electronics NB3530A Sound Bar System. Yes, it's a sound bar designed to be wall mounted, but I've learned it doesn't have to be. If your tv is on a stand, you'll probably be able to figure a way to place the sound bar in front, in back or on another shelf. The sub-woofer can go any place you like that makes sense since it's wireless.

I love LG, just not this base speaker.

Only okay for the price Feb. 6 2014

Bought the LAP345c, which I assume is almost identical based on descriptions, an impulse buy at Costco because we needed to replace a 10 year old Bose 321 system which recently died. Returned it. Used an optical out cable from my tv. Not much bass, not much separation. Better than TV sound, and voices were clear, but otherwise unsatisfying. If you have zero space for additional speakers or a subwoofer, then this might be a decent choice, but I would not recommend it strongly.

Much improved sound vs. stock, also a bluetooth speaker. Nov. 28 2013

This is an attractive, sturdy unit that serves as the base for an 80 lb. television, and sounds better than my stock T.V. speakers. it has the added advantage of playing music from my laptop/phone/tablet/iPod touch through a blue tooth connection.
The user interface is a simple infrared remote (battery is shipped loose in the documentation envelope) and multi-color LED that indicates the unit status, but it isn't really needed except when pairing a device via bluetooth. There are redundant controls on the back of the base that can be used when the remote goes A.W.O.L.

Two things to consider before buying this:
The first is the inputs available. Other than bluetooth, optical is the ONLY option. A cable is included, and it was more than long enough to reach from the T.V. to the back of the speaker/base. If you have a recently made t.v. you probably have an optical-out connector. The nice thing about the optical connector is that you can run just one sound cable from the T.V. which cuts down on the jumble of wires behind the T.V.
The second is the overall dimensions of the sound plate. It is 1.5" high, 27&5/8" wide, and 14" deep with the power cord attached.

Other reviewers complained about the omission of the remote battery and the quality of the optical cable (falling out). I did get a battery, and, when compared the optical cable to others that I have in my disturbingly large collection of plugs, the connectors on the ends of the optical cable included with my sound plate work just like others that I have.
