Book Description

April 1 2010 Life (Life Books)

The same editors who had great success with

100 Photographs that Changed the World and

100 Events that Shook Our World now look at the titanic personalities who, by sheer will and talent and sometimes accident, shaped human events.

Religious and political leaders, artists, scientists, and adventurers are all represented in these pages—cultural icons of the greatest fame and obscurities that will surprise the reader. Albert Einstein is here, of course, and so is Madame Curie. Crucial issues of race are examined in the lives of not only Rosa Parks and Nelson Mandela and Barack Obama, but of Jesse Owens and Jackie Robinson and Muhammad Ali. Certainly Abraham Lincoln and George Washington were the indispensable men. But what of Thomas Paine, Igor Stravinsky, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Walt Disney, Rachel Carson, Steve Jobs, and Steve Wozniak?

This is a book of vibrant history, and it is also a book that is full of fun—fun facts, fun tidbits, fun arguments, fun and rarely seen pictures. It is also a smart book that will appeal to the inquisitive school kid as much as to his or her parents.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good book for browsing and a jumping-off point for further study Jan 22 2012
By Thomas E. Davis - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
There are several pictorial guides like this one from Time-Life (100 Ideas that Changed the World, History's Greatest Events: 100 Turning Points That Changed the World, etc) each of which is colorfully illustrated and concisely written. This volume focuses on important people who lived during different periods of history. It's a combination of Cliffs Notes and parlor game, reviewing historical figures you had to study in high school and prompting the question of who you would have included on or excluded from the list.

The book is divided into four sections: "Religious Figures & Philosopher Kings," "Leaders, Elected & Not," "Scientists, Inventors & Innovators," and "Cultural Icons." While academic critics may take issue with the decidedly modern and Western choices of names as well as the "mile-wide, inch-deep" approach to history, the book is nevertheless useful and enjoyable. Anything that has the potential to activate interest in and additional reading on particular cultures, eras, events, and individuals is a positive influence.

5.0 out of 5 stars Similar To Teens Who Impacted the World Mar 9 2013
By Bob - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
The book is outstanding, it is very similar to the book entitled: Teens and Young People Who Impacted the World that came out three months before Life's Edition. Life's book features many of the same individuals featured in the the teen book. The biggest difference is that the teen book provides facts that are not commonly known about Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey, Dr King, Rosa Parks, Mother Teresa, Jesus, Florence Nightingale and many others - who started the career that made them famous as teens or younger. Both books are easy to read and are designed for the "texting-generation" that likes to hear the complete story in the fewest of words possible. I like the teen book better because it shows the struggle that these famous individuals had to overcome as kids before they achieved their success. For instance, in the teen book instead of talking about Lincoln, it talked about the 234,000 teenage soliders that helped Lincoln win the war. You can't go wrong with either book, they both are collector's items that your children need and will cherish. Both books are available on Amazon.com. The one on teens was written by a former inner-city gang member and has recieved raved reviews from the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (General Martin E. Demsey) for the chapter on teens in the military and the wars they helped to win.
