Book Description

Aug 9 2011 Life (Life Books)
Can a still image change the way people feel and act concerning the world they live in? It surely can, often has, and still does today. The power of pictures is celebrated in this portfolio of the most forceful still images of all time. Robert Capa's dispatches from the beach at Normandy and Joe Rosenthal's photographic report of Iwo Jima stirred a nation as in quite an opposite way did Eddie Adams' and Larry Burrows' searing imagery from Vietnam.

LIFE thinks outside the box in this book: Did Marilyn Monroe's pinup change the world? Did Harry Benson's photography of the Beatles deplaning in New York in 1964 alter our cultural focus? The pictures in this book are sometimes beautiful, often striking, and undeniably powerful. On occasion, our arguments are provocative, even controversial. How does LIFE view 9/11? Abu Ghraib? The murders long ago in Mississippi so recently brought to justice? LIFE views these things, not in a political sense, but in the way pictures spoke the story. A fascinating volume, brought up to date.

3.0 out of 5 stars Quite biased Dec 1 2012
The photographs are quite interesting with short but informative articles for each one. The selection of photographs does of course require that choices had to be made and many important ones are left out. Perhaps the major failing is that the book should most accurately be entitled 100 Photographs that were Most Important to the Unisted States of America, as at least 80% of the photos are entirely or partly of concern to the United States (Patty Hearst robbing a bank is really of worldwide importance?).

So if you view the world through an lens made in the U.S.A. you might enjoy the book, but from another country, maybe not.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting book. May 9 2012

I purchased this book for my girlfriend. She had flipped through it several years ago but never purchased it, it's my surprise to her.

The book is very well put together and the selection of photographs is interesting; you can see why they're considered "photographs that changed the world".

One complaint about the book is that the copy I received from Amazon.com has a long cut on book's slipcase along the spine; most likely from the unboxing process in the warehouse.

I will be requesting a replacement from Amazon and if the new copy comes in new condition, I will replace my 4 star rating with a 5.

We bought this book as a gift for someone older and they were riveted. Very nice size, not too heavy. Easy to pick up and look at. Its updated but not much. Doesn't need to be, its a classic with very powerful photos.
