Book Description

May 15 2012
It was the early 1960s, and England's youth, inspired by American rock 'n' roll and rhythm and blues, was finding its own sound. Bands were forming throughout the land. Some would endure in memory, legacy or influence-the Yardbirds, the Kinks, even the Beatles-but one would go on and on and on to become the self-proclaimed (and generally acclaimed) Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World.

The Rolling Stones formed precisely a half century ago, and are still at work-or, rather, at play, celebrating 50 years of phenomenal music and a journey as raucous as "Jumping Jack Flash." LIFE's cameras were there early and have been there since, capturing all the ragged glory. The same editors who produced a bestselling book on the Beatles now look at the long history of the Stones: the mysterious death of founder Brian Jones, the essential push-pull relationship of Jagger and Richard, the '60s signpost that was Altamont, the later glam and then the welcomed return to roots. Lynn Goldsmith's photography is here, and so is that of Bill Eppridge and other LIFE shooters on the beat. In special sections, the legendary tour chronicled in the documentary film "Gimme Shelter" is revisited with stills from the film (including the crucial moment at Altamont), and the current lives of Mick and Keith (Johnny Depp's best friend! New York Times bestselling author!) are shown in their colorful splendor. There are funny moments (the early Stones with TV host Dean Martin, who just doesn't get it, when they first fail-miserably-to "conquer America") and many thrilling ones.

This special edition of LIFE commemorating the Stones at 50 chronicles how the band not only captured the hearts and minds of this country's rock fans, but the world's.

4.0 out of 5 stars Half Century of The Stones Mar 4 2013
By Uldis Kundrats TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
With its oversized pages and ambitious objective, LIFE's career retrospective THE ROLLING STONES: 50 Years of Rock'n'Roll is a book that's bound to be up against some predictable limitations.

The photographs and text inserts in RS: 50 focus, for the most part, on the first few years of the Rolling Stones run as rock stars. One of the sections that evokes the most poignant memories is a picture spread on the late Ian Stewart, who was an original member of the Stones. Stewart was pushed out of the band early on by then-manager Andrew Oldham, who thought that Stewart didn't have teen appeal. He continued on as road manager for the Stones, having been promised a full share of
the band's income by the ill-fated Brian Jones. This condition was never fulfilled.

Most of the principal past and present members of the Stones feature in their fair share of the pictures in ROLLING STONES 50, with Jagger and Richards occupying centre stage and Brian Jones, Mick Taylor, and Ronnie Wood accorded profiles of their own. Former bass player Bill Wyman is only pictured in group shots. When the Stones 50th anniversary concerts took place in London and New York, both Wyman and Taylor were given guest spots.

The latter part of the Rolling Stones career is sparsely referenced in RS:50, and that's to be expected, as the group's tours have leaned toward photographer-unfriendly stadium spectacles. Still trying to avoid being boxed in as a high priced oldies act, the Rolling Stones are not their former photogenic selves, either.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed July 11 2012
By J. L. S. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Although there are some photos I hadn't seen before, the narrative is written for the "Tiger Beat" teen mentality. And though the title mentions 50 years, the book stops in 2006.

Well the photos are nice. It does stop in 2006. Where's the last 6 years? It is a "SOFTCOVER" magazine not a hardcover as advertised. Probably not worth the price...

5.0 out of 5 stars "A LEGACY OF ROCK AND ROLL!" July 16 2012
By Geraldine Ahearn - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
It was the 60s, and 'The Rolling Stones' made it to the Top of the charts, finding their way to fame and fortune. The Dick Clark show always introduced and presented this incredible group of 'England's youth, where they came from, and how far they have gone. This is a Celebration of fifty years of phenomenal music symbolic to the era in many ways. They are one of the Greatest bands in the world and their music will always live on. Enjoyable and Highly Recommended!
